Seven Arrested in Drunk Driving Incidents in Pulaski County

 The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department was one of 250 law enforcement agencies that participated in the Operation Pull Over effort over the Thanksgiving holiday.

Sheriff Michael Gayer stated that seven impaired drivers were arrested in the campaign.

The Indiana State Police was also involved in this effort. Officers participated in extra patrols during the Thanksgiving travel weekend in the Safe Family Travel, Operation Pull Over campaign that ended Sunday.

Governor Pence to Visit Winamac Today

LaPorte Police Investigate Incident Involving Alleged Gun Fire

 
 

LaPorte City Police Department officers responded to a call of shots fired on Friday and all people at the scene denied any knowledge of the action, despite the location of the gun and spent casings found at the scene.

When officers arrived at 1083 E. State Road 2 near lot #806, two men standing outside ran into the home while one man stayed outside. Officers asked the man if he had heard any gunshots and he said that he hadn’t.

After-School Program Offers Art Activities for Students

  
 

Students in the eighth grade all the way through college are invited to take part in a community event every Tuesday in North Judson.

If you enjoy art, this will be the ticket for you. Starting today, a free after-school program will feature art, literature, music, poetry and some other skill building event from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. CT every Tuesday at The Studio, 424 Lane Street in North Judson.

Hannah Minix told WKVI that this is an opportunity for students to develop a skill in some aspect of art, whether it be drawing, writing musical lyrics or discussing literature. She noted that it’s a safe place to go after school and get away from the stresses of school.

WKVI Food Drive at Sanders, Five Star Begins at 9 a.m.

 
 
It’s finally here. The fourth WKVI Food Drive at Five Star – and this year, Sanders Foods as well – runs this morning from 9 a.m. until noon, live on K99.3 FM. The staff is hoping to outdo last year’s donation of 375 pounds of food for the local food pantry, and to aid in that, the food drivee features a new addition to the event as WKVI General Manager Jerry Curtis will be broadcasting live and accepting donations at Sander’s Foods in Winamac while Tom Berg and Lenny Dessauer broadcast and collect at Five Star in Knox.

Plymouth PD Investigating Restaurant Burglary

Plymouth Police Department detectives are investigating a burglary at the Symphony Family Restaurant.

Officers received word that on Friday, Nov. 15 at 12:26 a.m. that a burglary was taking place at the business at 1410 N. Michigan Street. The manager of the facility surprised the suspect when he entered the building. The suspect fled on foot from the restaurant and no vehicle was seen.

Three Arrested after Standoff with Police in Pulaski County

 Three people were arrested after a stand off with several members of law enforcement in Pulaski County Thursday night.

James Anthony Miller, 48, failed to return to the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department after working at a local business as part of work release. The sheriff’s department was notified of Miller’s whereabouts at a residence north of Medaryville on U.S. 421. Two officers approached the house on foot in the dark and they could clearly see Miller, and two other people wanted on warrants inside the home.

Friday Morning Accident Claims Life of Francesville Teenager

 
 

A Francesville teenager died of injuries sustained in a car accident Friday morning.

Pulaski County Sheriff’s deputies were called to State Road 114 and County 1600 West shortly after 7 a.m. on a report of a serious accident. Deputies investigated the scene and found that 19-year-old Zachery R. Conkel of Francesville failed to stop at that intersection and struck the right side of a semi tractor trailer driven by 42-year-old Gilberto Alvarez of Lansing, Illinois.

Wireman Cases Will Not Go to Trial

Sadie Wireman and Michael Wireman’s cases will not go to trial in Starke Circuit Court.

During a hearing held Tuesday, their defense attorney and the prosecuting attorney presented an agreed recommendation for a sentence for their guilty pleas. The mother and son would be pleading guilty to an amended charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance as a Class D felony. Judge Kim Hall will review the recommended sentence and a sentencing hearing was set for Thursday, Dec. 5 at 9 a.m.

Three Wanted Criminals Arrested in LaPorte County

 
 
Officers with the LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit arrested three people Friday on outstanding criminal warrants.

Officers served an arrest warrant to a suspect in the LaPorte County Jail. Shalovis Robinson, 22, was being held in the jail for violating probation at the time she was served the warrant. She is now being charged with three counts of Dealing a Schedule I Controlled Substance (heroin), a Class B felony.

Chris Bojcev approached the commissioners and explained that he has been having problems with the road that he lives near for some time, and now that the road has been paved, the problems have only increased.

Water Conditioner Presentation Given at Marshall County Commissioners Meeting

  
 
The Marshall County Commissioners entertained information from Dean Freije from High Tech Water Equipment.

Freije explained the benefits of a no-salt conditioner at the Marshall County Jail. He claimed his product can cut down on scale build-up and leave water lines clear of debris. This technology would take the place of a salt conditioner and reportedly be maintenance-free for 10 to 20 years.

The Oregon-Davis School Board met in executive session Monday night where they voted to hold a public hearing on Monday, Nov. 18 at 6:15 p.m. This will be a time for members of the district to voice opinions on the proposed contract of employment for the Superintendent of Schools.

Oregon-Davis Schools Receive $30,000 Matching School Safety Grant

The Oregon-Davis School Corporation has been allocated $30,000 as part of the Secured Schools Safety Grant Program to allow the school to hire a school resource officer. According to Interim Superintendent Greg Briles, the grant will have a positive impact on the schools.

“We think it’s going to have a great impact on our school. What our plans are, is we are going to have a resource officer now, not only in our junior/senior high school, but we will have one in our elementary school, working with our elementary school students as well,” said Briles.

Knox Community School Board Approves Last QSCB Claim

The Knox Community School Board approved the last claim for the Qualified School Construction Bond Monday night.

The QSCB money was used to renovate the pool at the high school and to work on water lines that were clogged and deteriorating. The money also allowed for the purchase and installation of new lockers at the high school.

Superintendent A.J. Gappa explained that some other projects were completed at the high school within the two year span of the funding.

“We had some monies left over so we’ve been doing some other projects at the high school that were included in the project,” said Gappa. “This was the final claim. We had a deadline coming up where we had to expend all of the money from that project. We were down to the last $7,000 and so the board had approved that last claim for some repair work at the high school.”

Starke County 4-H Youth, Adult Volunteers Honored

 
 
Several youth and adult volunteers were honored by the Starke County 4-H program as they celebrated the accomplishments of the volunteers from the 2013 program year. Among those honored was Wayne Emigh, who was recognized for his 65 years of dedication and commitment to the program, having most recently served as the electric project leader.

Sarah Gillard was named the Outstanding 4-H Leader for 2013. Gillard, the Shooting Sports leader, was nominated for this award by other 4-H volunteers and 4-H members, and was chosen by a committee of 4-H Extension educators from across the state.
