Starke County Building Inspector Terry Stephenson could soon have a new-to-him, county-issued vehicle. County Council President Freddie Baker says the one he’s currently driving is “junk.” He says Stephenson recently could not get it to go over 30 miles per hour and nearly got stranded recently. Baker says Stephenson also has to use his wife’s car because his county vehicle was not running. Continue reading

Due to a clerical error, some Knox sewer customers will be seeing a rather steep increase in their sewer bills. Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston told the Board of Works last week a step was missed in his office to account for the non-metered customers when the first phase of the rate increase took effect in April of 2016. The Starke County Commissioners will reorganize for the year when they meet this evening. Republican Kathy Norem returns for another term, alongside Democrat Don Binkley. He was elected two years ago. Republican Charles Chesak will take over the third seat on the county’s executive body. He replaces fellow Republican Kent Danford, who did not seek reelection. A Michigan man has been arrested in the alleged shooting death of a pet donkey in LaPorte County. According to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to a home in the 8600 block of North Wilhelm Road shortly after 9:00 Sunday evening, in response to a possible domestic disturbance. The San Pierre Volunteer Fire Department will continue providing fire protection to Railroad Township for another month, following an emergency hearing in Starke Circuit Court Friday. It ended with both parties reaching an agreement to continue fire protection under the terms of the township’s current contract with the fire department until January 30. However, Fire Chief Joe Kryzyzanowski will temporarily step down during that time, with Assistant Chief Mike Korous taking over in an interim capacity. Continue reading
