The West Central School Board has decided to table further consideration of an Indiana Department of Education grant.
IDOE’s High Ability grants are distributed every year to the state’s school corporations. West Central has, in the past, used the monies for things like calculators or other classroom materials to help “high ability” students with the learning process.

North Judson residents will have the chance to learn more about a planned recycling transfer station during tonight’s North Judson Town Council meeting. It’s been moved to the North Judson–San Pierre Junior/Senior High School Auditorium to handle the many residents expected to be in attendance. Officials from Metro Recycling as well as the Starke County Economic Development Foundation are scheduled to discuss the new transfer station and address residents’ concerns. Continue reading

The Winamac Town Park will see several of its dead trees replaced, thanks to the Indiana Department of Transportation. INDOT had planted trees in the Town Park, to replace ones that were removed as part of a State Road 14 reconstruction project. However, many of those trees have been unable to survive. The Pulaski County Commissioners may sign an agreement to implement internal controls on the county government’s handling of finances.
The Starke County Chamber of Commerce presented a special award to a longtime member during last week’s awards banquet. Until recently George Mammarella owned and operated Economy Auto Sales in Knox for several years. A lifelong Knox resident who has made a career of community service is the recipient of the 2016 Starke County Chamber of Commerce Henry F. Schricker Award. The honor is named after the former governor and is given annually to someone who embodies his credo of “service before self.” Continue reading
Knox Community High School may have a new assistant principal in the near future.
Administration and staff at the high school formed a committee earlier this year to accept applications for the position after it was vacated by former Assistant Principal Dave Miller. He has since accepted a position teaching Social Studies at the Middle School.
As the Winamac Park Board considers whether to take ownership of the freight depot and caboose, one resident is pushing the town to take over the log cabin behind the Pulaski County Public Library, as well. The Pulaski County Historical Society offered all three structures to the town last month, in hopes the town could better utilize them. Continue reading
The Town of Winamac plans to make some sidewalk repairs with money left over from its paving projects. Town Manager Brad Zellers told the town council Monday the paving bill came in about $18,000 less than what the contractor had bid, since less material was needed than originally thought.
