The City of Knox hopes to leverage matching grant money from the state to complete up to five road improvement projects. Mayor Dennis Estok told the city council last night each is a separate proposal on the application that’s being submitted to the Indiana Department of Transportation. The state awarded one-time Local Option Income Tax distributions to cities, towns and counties, on the condition that 75 percent of that money must be used for infrastructure improvements. Cooley Named Yellowstone Trail Festival Grand Marshal
A lifelong Hamlet resident is the grand marshal for this year’s Yellowstone Trail Festival Parade. Jim Cooley is known as the Hamlet Inventor. He’s been tinkering since his teenage years, when he worked at Jones’ Repair Shop. Cooley did body work, mechanical repairs, painting and whatever else needed done on a vehicle. Ancilla College Prepares for Autism Education Center
Ancilla College says it intends to use grant funds to help develop programs for those diagnosed with Aspeger’s Spectrum Disorder.
The Ball Brothers Venture Fund helped provide $75-thousand worth of grants for various projects through the Independent Colleges of Indiana. Ancilla College’s share of the benefits is just more than $20-thousand.
North Judson Issues Pool Permit Reminder

Starke County Looks to Expand WorkOne Partnership
The Starke County Commissioners hope to expand their success with a WorkOne job training program to other departments within county government. Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler was the first to take advantage of the agency’s offer of free help to teach young people so-called “soft skills” like showing up to work on time, following directions and adhering to a schedule. LaPorte Police Issue “Blanket Ordinance” Reminder
Early birds vying for a prime spot to watch the 70th annual LaPorte Jaycees Parade on July 4th may wind up with fines. The city’s “Blanket Ordinance” prohibits the placing of any item or object in the public right-of-way as an attempt to reserve a spot along the parade route prior to 10 a.m. on July 3rd. Rural LaPorte County Woman Dead Following Crash
A Monday morning crash has resulted in the death of the car’s driver.
LaPorte County authorities were called to County Road 200 East south of State Road 4 around 6:50 a.m. According to an incident report, a 2004 Hyundai Sonata was found overturned in a field several hundred feet from the roadway by a passerby when authorities were called.
Starke County Overhauls Bridge Replacement Standards
The Starke County Highway Department is upgrading some of its bridge replacement standards. Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler says plans for the new bridge on 250 West south of Toto Road over Bogus Run include a longer guardrail. Continue reading

NIPSCO Enters Construction Phase on Reynolds-Topeka Line
Construction on the Reynolds-Topeka Transmission Line is getting underway and NIPSCO says they continue to expect operations to begin in 2018.
The project is a multi-county, multi-million dollar project designed to increase the effectiveness of utilities providers in Northern Indiana. NIPSCO isn’t alone, however, in their efforts. Similar projects are going on across the country in an attempt to meet federal renewable energy standards.
