Roger C. Verhagen, 93, died Thursday, February 7, 2019 at his home. He was born May 6, 1925 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Christian M. and Marie (Natelborg) Verhagen.
Roger served in the Army Air Corps in WWII. He then graduated from Northern Illinois College of Optometry. He practiced Optometry in Knox and North Judson from 1950 to 1996.
Roger enjoyed singing, golfing & playing tennis (in his younger years), long car rides, philosophical talks and most of all spending time with his beloved family.
He will be especially remembered for his unique sense of humor that brought laughter and joy to all who knew and loved him. He was very proud of his Dutch heritage and he loved Hershey bars, Fingerhut chocolate donuts and Coca-Cola. Roger had attended North Judson United Methodist Church.
He is survived by two sons: Dr. Christian (Anne) Verhagen of Noblesville, IN and Kirt (Elizabeth) Verhagen of Zionsville, IN, one daughter, Amy (Michael) Mosher of North Judson, IN, and grandchildren: Adam Mosher, Steven Verhagen, Andrew Verhagen, Olivia Verhagen, Ashlyn Mosher and Garrett Verhagen. He is also survived by his former wife, companion and caregiver, Joyce Verhagen.
He was preceded in death by two brothers: Lt. Donald Verhagen (killed in action WWII) and Dr. Paul Verhagen, and two sisters: LaVerne Steck and Jean Hagen (Hollywood actress).
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be given to “North Judson United Methodist Church Outreach Building”, which houses the Kid’s Closet and Food Pantry ministries that serve our community. (NJUMC, 210 W. Central Ave., North Judson, IN 46366).
