James S. McCay, age 76, of Michigan City, Indiana, passed away on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at his daughter’s home in Humble, Texas following a 10 year battle with prostate cancer. He was born on May 1, 1946 in LaPorte, Indiana, the son of James F. and Violet I. (Engle) McCay.
James is survived by his wife Sharon Lynn (Schwarzlose). He was wonderful man and a devoted and loving father, grandfather, and brother to his two sons, James L. and Christopher R., daughter Mandy Martinez, four grandchildren, Corinne McCay, Morgan Martinez, Gavin Martinez, and Evan Martinez, two sisters Carolyn Ruddle and Linda Caudill, and many nieces and nephews.
James graduated from Knox High School, Class of 1964. Following graduation, he served with the U.S. Army at Fort Eustis, Virginia during the Vietnam War. He married Sharon Lynn Schwarzlose, his wife of 55 years, and they settled in Michigan City, Indiana. His career was spent working at Bethlehem and LTV Steel Mills. During his retirement years, he enjoyed traveling and spending time with his family, near and far.
A viewing will be held on Friday, November 25, 2022 from 3:00-7:00 pm (CT) at M.C. Smith Funeral Home in Knox. A funeral service will take place on Saturday, November 26, 2022 at 1:00pm (CT), with visitation two hours prior to services, at M.C. Smith Funeral Home, 153 E. Washington St., Knox, IN 46534. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. Those who wish to remember James in a special way may make gifts in his memory to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.
