An alternative learning environment for some West Central students will continue in 2017/2018.
The Indiana Department of Education recently visited the school corporation to observe the Trojan Opportunity Academy. The setting allows at-risk students to absorb coursework in an environment that fits their needs better than a traditional classroom.

Starke County favored Republicans in many key races in Tuesday’s election. The race to replace Kent Danford as the District 3 County Commissioner ended with Charles Chesak gaining 59 percent of the vote, compared to 37 percent for Democrat Karen Tibbs. Meanwhile, Kathy Norem keeps her District 1 seat, after defeating Buddy Ringle by a margin of 65-to-35 percent. Continue reading
A proposed recycling transfer station in the North Judson Industrial Park drew several complaints from residents during a contentious North Judson Town Council meeting Monday. The planned Metro Recycling facility would handle municipal solid waste, as well as construction debris like concrete and untreated wood. Continue reading
The City of Knox is celebrating the recent completion of a couple of roadway extensions. County Road 150 South is now a through street from South Heaton Street near Sandy Acres Park past the Knox bus barn to Roosevelt Road. Continue reading
The Starke County Fair and 4-H program have received $10,000 in grant funding, thanks to Kankakee Valley REMC and CoBank. Kankakee Valley REMC says its $5,000 donation is just the latest part of its regular support of county fairs in Starke, Pulaski, LaPorte, and Porter counties. Continue reading
The Winamac Park Board continues to evaluate the town’s relationship with the Eastern Pulaski School Corporation. While the schools use the Town Park for some athletic activities, there’s no formal lease agreement between the two entities. Continue reading
The Culver Town Council and members of the Stellar Communities Steering Committee are gearing up for another year of preparation.
Culver was named a finalist in the small population category in the state’s Stellar Communities program. They were eventually bested by Corydon. Stellar Communities helps with planning and future grant applications by designating a community worthy of extensive state investment.
The West Central School Board has decided to table further consideration of an Indiana Department of Education grant.
IDOE’s High Ability grants are distributed every year to the state’s school corporations. West Central has, in the past, used the monies for things like calculators or other classroom materials to help “high ability” students with the learning process.
Today’s Elections have drawn a mixed bag of rescheduled standing meetings and business as usual. Polls are open today from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. local time, after which people traditionally wait for returns. Continue reading
North Judson residents will have the chance to learn more about a planned recycling transfer station during tonight’s North Judson Town Council meeting. It’s been moved to the North Judson–San Pierre Junior/Senior High School Auditorium to handle the many residents expected to be in attendance. Officials from Metro Recycling as well as the Starke County Economic Development Foundation are scheduled to discuss the new transfer station and address residents’ concerns. Continue reading
Election Day isn’t until tomorrow, but many voters have already cast their ballots. Nearly 2,000 absentee ballots had been cast in Starke County by Friday afternoon. Continue reading
The Winamac Town Park will see several of its dead trees replaced, thanks to the Indiana Department of Transportation. INDOT had planted trees in the Town Park, to replace ones that were removed as part of a State Road 14 reconstruction project. However, many of those trees have been unable to survive. The Starke County Chamber of Commerce presented a special award to a longtime member during last week’s awards banquet. Until recently George Mammarella owned and operated Economy Auto Sales in Knox for several years. In 2012 he was chosen Independent Dealer of the Year by the Indiana Independent Auto Dealers Association. Continue reading
