The American Red Cross is hosting a drive tomorrow at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church on South Heaton Street in Knox in honor of WKVI morning show host Tom Berg. He was diagnosed last summer with Stage 4 cancer and is on medical leave during his treatment. Tom used to be a faithful blood donor but is no longer able to give due to his medical condition. The Culver School Board will get an update tonight on how much it would cost to move the corporation’s administrative offices out of their current stand-alone building. Starke County Youth Club Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says nationwide 11.3 million school-aged children are unsupervised after school. The 2016 “Map the Meal Gap” report shows there still too many Hoosiers who go hungry. The annual study by the group Feeding America details food insecurity rates in every county and congressional district in the country. It found 15 percent of Indiana’s population is “food insecure.” Emily Weikert Bryant of Feeding Indiana’s Hungry says that’s over a million people. Continue reading
Knox residents can weigh in on their choice of recycling container by either contacting city hall or returning the insert included with their water bills. The city council is contemplating a switch from the open totes that are picked up weekly to a 65-gallon wheeled container with a lid. Waste Management would supply them for free and collect recycling every other week. Residents would not incur an additional cost. Continue reading

AARP-Indiana Community Outreach Director Mandla Moyo says someone is a victim of identity theft every two to three seconds. The Knox Street Department will pick up leaves next week. They should be placed along the curb in front of your residence in a long row. Do not put them in the alley, and do not bag them. Garbage contractors will not pick up bagged leaves. Trash should also be kept out of leaf piles so they can easily be vacuumed up. Continue reading

The Knox City Council will consider an overhaul of the local golf cart ordinance at their next meeting. Review copies of the proposal were handed out to city council members Tuesday for review. Mayor Dennis Estok says there are quite a few proposed changes. The biggest is a requirement that golf cart owners register the vehicles. They would be subject to inspections, and an annual fee would be charged. Continue reading
Saturday marks the last opportunity for weekend early and absentee voting leading up to the May 3rd primary election.
Absentee voting has been ongoing in the state since early April. Voting hours continue to be offered during the weekdays at the Starke County Clerk’s office in Knox, but also at Winamac Branch of the Pulaski County Public Library.
