The Starke County Community Foundation honored Marilyn and Mathew Swanson Tuesday with the first annual James R. Hardesty Leadership in Philanthropy Award. Today the Knox Middle School is hosting a “Reality Store” for 8th grade students from Knox, North Judson, Oregon-Davis and Culver schools.
ISTEP scores were discussed by administrators at the Culver Community Schools Corporation during Monday’s school board meeting. The school principals said they weren’t allowed to go into specifics about the preliminary scores but said they were noticeably lower than in previous years. Continue reading
There has been no action yet, but Pulaski County may be inching closer to the implementation of its own Frost Law.
Discussion was had during Monday night’s meeting about when an ordinance might be completed. Under a frost law, commercial trucking traffic is disallowed from traveling on certain roadways between February and late April. That’s considered when concrete is in a deep thaw and susceptible to potholes.

Nearly six months after the first inmates moved into the new Starke County Jail east of Knox the architect and builder are recommending a $525,000 addition to the facility. Architect and project manager Scott Carnegie with DLZ told the council and commissioners an automatic auger would catch small items like cellophane and plastic wrappers inmates flush down the toilets and keep them out of the city’s sanitary sewer system. The Knox School board, in a divided decision, voted to continue with its current property casualty insurance provider, First Source Bank, Liberty Mutual. It had heard a presentation from a school cooperative provider of insurance last month.
