The new alternative faith-based school, the Crossing, hosted an open house Wednesday at their location in Knox. So far about 10 students are enrolled to attend. They will be hosting another open house today from 8 a.m until 3 p.m at the old Sears store in the Mint Leaf Plaza off of U.S. 35.
Monterey Man Pleads Guilty to Marijuana Charges
A Monterey man pleaded guilty to marijuana charges and was sentenced in Starke Circuit Court on Wednesday morning.
Roland Minix, 49, pleaded guilty to charges of possession of marijuana under 30 grams and possession of marijuana with a prior conviction.
Back-to-School Shots and Physicals Available at Health and Wellness Fair
HealthLinc in Knox is celebrating National Health Center Week. On Aug. 8 from 3 until 6 p.m. a variety of free activities will be offered at their location behind IU Health Starke Hospital. Stolen Water Service Lands Man in Jail
A LaPorte man was arrested on Sunday after reportedly stealing water service from the City of LaPorte.
LaPorte police were called to a 4-unit apartment at 101 Bond Street after a complaint was filed about theft of water services.
Police learned that the water service had been turned off to the apartment. Several notices had been given to the tenant that it was unlawful to turn on the water unless it was done by an employee with the water department.
Three Defendants Sentenced in Starke Circuit Court
Three Knox residents were sentenced in Starke Circuit Court Wednesday morning.
Kayla Maassen, 21, pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of a legend drug, both Class D felonies. She was sentenced to serve 18 months in the Indiana Department of Corrections with nine months suspended to be served on probation on each charge. The remaining part of the sentence was permitted to be served with Starke County Community Corrections with daily reporting. The sentences will run concurrently, or at the same time.
Grain Bin Safety
Since 1980 grain bins across the U.S have been responsible for more than 180 deaths and 675 injuries. Just last year, a Hoosier farmer in La Porte county was killed in a grain bin accident. This month a 9-year-old Wisconsin boy was killed after falling into a grain bin. With harvest time approaching the Indiana Department of Labor wants to remind everyone of the hazardous nature of working with grain bins and offer some tips to assure safety.
New Crew Chief Named for Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s Team
A crew chief for a popular driver in the NASCAR Nationwide Series will be headed to the Sprint Cup level in 2015.
Greg Ives will be the crew chief for Dale Earnhardt, Jr.’s No. 88 team in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series in 2015.
It was announced at the beginning of this year’s season that Steve Letarte would be leaving as Dale Jr.’s crew chief at the end of 2014 to be an analyst for NBC when NASCAR coverage moves to that affiliate in 2015.
Winamac Man Arrested on Drug Possession Charges
A Winamac man was arrested early Sunday morning after he was reportedly found in possession of methamphetamine.
A Winamac police officer saw a red vehicle in the parking lot by the Pulaski County Public Library with the driver present. The officer knew that vandalism was occurring to a structure by the library so he approached the car.
Alexis Houston Sentenced in Starke Circuit Court Hearing
Alexis Houston was sentenced in Starke Circuit Court Tuesday morning.
Houston previously pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to charges of possession of methamphetamine as a Class D felony and visiting a common nuisance as a Class B misdemeanor.
Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall accepted the plea agreement. Houston was sentenced to two years in the Indiana Department of Corrections with one year suspended to be served on probation on the charge of possession of methamphetamine. She was also sentenced to serve six months in the Starke County Jail with no part of the sentence suspended on the charge of visiting a common nuisance. The sentence was permitted to be served on home detention.
The sentences will run concurrently, or at the same time.
Police Investigate Theft from Unlocked Structure
Officers with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department are attempting to solve a burglary that occurred between 11 p.m. on Friday, July 25 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26.
Some unknown suspect(s) entered an unlocked barn in the 14,000 block of 6th Road in Plymouth and removed approximately $5,000 worth of hand tools, power tools and scrap wire.
Free Dental Exams at I.U. Health La Porte Dental Center for Children Who Qualify
The Indiana University Health La Porte Dental Center is offering free dental exams to children to kids with no dental insurance. The exams are by appointment only on August 4th, 5th, 7th and 8th from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. and August 6th and 13th from 4 p.m until 6 p.m. Not only will children receive an exam that fulfills area school requirements but children will also get a free bag of dental-related gifts. Starke County Council Approves North Judson Library Appropriation
The North Judson-Wayne Township Public Library is set to replace three air conditioning units installed in 1997 with money from their rainy day fund. Director Jane Ellen Felchuk says two units were replaced last year, and the remaining two will be swapped out in the next year or two. Continue reading
Don’t Trust Caller ID
There are scammers using technology to impersonate phone numbers of local businesses that show up on Caller ID. These are robo calls and the scammers use familiar looking numbers in hopes you will answer the call and take your money.
They purchase a list of phone numbers and use spoofing technology to trick callers into picking up the phone. They sometimes use your phone number because it is not blocked.
Something Fishy Pets is Moving
A child recently had his finger bitten at the pet store that is located at 1700 S Heaton Street in Knox. Though signs are posted warning customers to keep fingers away from cages since animals are unpredictable, a child sustained a minor injury.
Due to this recent incident, the store owner Sue Webb was asked to cease selling rodents within city limits by July 31st. She sells her domestically-bred rats and mice to individuals for carnivorous reptiles. According to Webb it makes up 50 percent of her business.
GermanFest Set for Aug. 9
GermanFest returns to Winamac on Saturday, Aug. 9.
The event begins with a golf outing at 8 a.m. ET at Pond View Golf Course. Music and children’s activities will be ongoing from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Create-a-canvas will spark talent in residents and those pieces of art will be sold at a silent auction with the proceeds to benefit GermanFest.
NASCAR Hands Down Hefty Penalty to JGR Team
A post-race inspection at Indianapolis Motor Speedway has resulted in a hefty penalty for the No. 11 Joe Gibbs Racing team.
The infraction is a P5 level penalty which is a step down from the stiffest penalty in the NASCAR handbook.
According to NASCAR, the penalties came after officials found parts on Denny Hamlin’s car that fail or were improperly installed to fail in their intended use of great importance. Those parts include “rear wheel panels that fail and allow air evacuation in the trunk area; an oil box cover that fails and allows air evacuation in the driver compartment; and a shifter boot cover that fails and allows air evacuation through the floor pan.”
Pulaski County Deputies Investigate Fatal Accident
Pulaski County Sheriff’s deputies and emergency crews responded to a fatality accident yesterday morning.
According to a news release from the sheriff’s department, Dollie Frinkel, 71, of Winamac was traveling westbound on County Road 600 West and failed to stop at the intersection with 100 South. A Pulaski County dump truck driven by David Bailey, 48, entered the intersection and could not avoid a collision with Frinkel’s passenger car.
Teen Charged with Arson
A house fire in Knox on Thursday turned out to be the act of arson and a suspect is in custody.
Firefighters from the Knox-Center Township Fire Department were called to a house fire in the 2000 East block of County Road 200 South at 8 p.m. on July 24. When they arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames.
School Board Candidates Can Now Submit Petitions for General Election
Candidates looking to sign up to run in the November 4th General Election for seats on the Knox Community School Board, Culver Community School Board or the Oregon-Davis School Board can do so now in the Starke County Clerk’s office.
Three seats are open on all of the school boards. Each candidate must file a petition with Starke County Clerk Evelyn Skronski by noon on Aug. 22 to be considered for placement on the ballot.
Pulaski County Officials Holding Out Hope for Hotel
Officials in Pulaski County remain hopeful of landing a hotel. Wisconsin-based Cobblestone Development is looking for local investors to help construct a 44-bed, businesses friendly hotel comparable to a Holiday Inn or Hampton Inn. Continue reading
