Elections in North Judson may have been affected after the Town failed to file a pair of ordinances with the Starke County Clerk’s office.
It was learned on Monday that an ordinance from 2001 outlining the annexation of land near North Judson, as well as an ordinance from 2012 redrawing election Wards, were filed with the Starke County Recorder’s office, but not the Clerk’s office. That means the changes are not recognized by the County until the ordinances are recertified.

Sysco hasn’t given up plans to build an expansion to its national operation near the intersection of U.S. 35 and 30. Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charles Weaver told the Hamlet Town Board last night that the company does not currently intend to offer for sale the land it owns near Hamlet. IU Health Starke Hospital officials hope to break ground on a new hospital in Knox within the next year. President Craig Felty says there’s no room to grow in the current building.
The record June rainfall kept the Starke County Highway Department busy. As of Wednesday, all Starke County roads are open. The county highway department does plan to build up for low areas that chronically flood. Continue reading
Pulaski County is about to make trash disposal a bit easier at their Transfer Station.
A credit/debit card machine will be installed to accept payments for items being disposed that will avoid inconveniencing businesses and individuals who happen to take advantage of the service.

The Town of North Judson has now finalized signs specifying where trucks can travel.
Town Council members approved an ordinance earlier this year creating a route that commercial trucking vehicles can travel while within the town limits. The ordinance not only helps prevent traffic issues, but also helps maintain the quality of North Judson’s roads.

Firefighters continued to battle flames on Wednesday afternoon that resulted from a morning fire in Winamac.
The Winamac Eagles Post #2580, located in the 600 block of West 11th Street, caught fire around 8:25 a.m. EDT. The cause of the blaze is still under investigation, but three State Fire Marshal’s were called to the scene to investigate.
A flood watch is in effect for the WKVI listening area from this evening through tomorrow morning. According to the National Weather Service, widespread rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is possible tonight into tomorrow. The rainfall onto already wet ground will likely create sufficient runoff for flooding of roadways, small streams and creeks, basements and other low-lying areas. Continue reading
The party carrying liability when an individual is buried in the wrong grave may be solved by the Indiana Code.
North Judson Town Council members informed Norman and Marilyn Derrickson – who own several grave plots in Highland Cemetery – that they did not plan to remove the individual who happens to be buried in a plot they currently own.
The winners in May’s Knox Municipal Primary Election do not have challengers in November’s General Election contest. Officials with the Starke County Clerk’s Office did not receive any candidate filings prior to Monday’s noon deadline. Continue reading
Pulaski County has expressed an interest in possibly insuring certain pieces of their infrastructure.
During Monday night’s Commissioner’s meeting, it was learned that sufficient damage may have been incurred as a result of flooding to be reimbursed the cost of repairs by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

Starke County government now has a purchasing policy in place aimed at supporting local businesses and ensuring greater oversight into expenditures. The policy adopted by the commissioners Monday night prohibits departments and officials from opening any retail accounts without authorization by the commissioners granted in a regular board meeting. If any accounts are approved, they will be in the name of Starke County Government. Continue reading
The North Judson School Board unanimously approved a resolution requesting a property tax levy referendum during their most recent meeting. The board has recently received some criticism about doing this now rather than during a regular election year.
Following their meeting Monday evening, the NJSP School Board held a work session to discuss the formation of a Political Action Committee. They considered various community members who could potentially be contacted to assist the school with the referendum process. The P.A.C would be responsible for making sure community members are registered to vote and spreading the word about the corporation and why the referendum is needed. Continue reading

A woman in North Judson recently reported to Police that she received some suspicious text messages from a place claiming to be the federal court asking for money to keep her out of jail. After looking into the legitimacy of the claims she deciphered it was a scam. Other scams have also been reported, one being a claim that the recipient had won a monetary prize but needed to send cash in order to obtain the money. The other was someone claiming to be from the IRS threatening to put the person in jail due to back taxes owed in the amount of over $5,000.
