North Judson Town Board Updated on Salt Shed, Town Garage

  
 
The town of North Judson is making some progress in constructing the new salt shed, according to Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry. She said the concrete floor has been poured for the shed, and materials for the building will be delivered on Nov. 27 with construction expected to begin on Dec. 3.

Henry said a public hearing will also be held next Tuesday, Nov. 12, to provide details on the upcoming lease agreement for the soon-to-be-constructed town garage. The hearing has been advertised in the paper, and afterward, Henry said the board will be able to sign the lease agreement.

Hopefully, Henry said, construction of the town garage will begin this year.

Starke EMS Seeking New Ambulance; Matter Goes to Council

The Starke County Commissioners this week gave the EMS department permission to request a new ambulance from the council. EMS Director Paul Mathewson approached the commissioners along with Mary Lynn Ritchie of the department. Mathewson explained that he would like to increase the number of shift captains as of the first of the year, and he has been working with Council President Dave Pearman on the next steps to get a new ambulance.

Gov. Mike Pence Presents Grant Funds to Knox School Officials

 
 
A year after being elected, Gov. Mike Pence paid a visit to Knox High School to announce the distribution of funds aimed at keeping students across Indiana safe.

“The Knox Community School Corporation has been awarded a grant for $50,000. This is the maximum allowable grant. It represents strong leadership in the corporation, and a real commitment by this community to make sure our schools are about learning and create a safe environment for our kids,” said Pence.

The Pulaski County Commissioners this week authorized a company to acquire quotes from three possible carriers of liability, casualty and workman compensation insurance. Pam Boor-Leeman approached the commissioners and explained that while there are seven primary companies involved in carrying this type of coverage, only three of them are real options. She said the primary issue with providing coverage is the county jail.

Knox School Board Spotlights Donation Efforts at the High School

The Knox Community School Board spotlighted the efforts of the high school science club for their recent donation to the food pantry in Starke County. Superintendent A.J. Gappa said it was a pretty unique donation.

“Mrs. Wood, one of our science club sponsors, has on her property a number of apple trees. Members of the science club went out and picked over 250 pounds of apples and donated those apples to the food pantry for distribution to those in need,” said Gappa.

Report Indicates First 8 Years Are Critical For Children’s Success

  
 
A recent report from the Annie E. Casey Foundation has indicated that half of Hoosier kids 8 and under are living in poverty, presenting dramatic challenges for kids in developing appropriate skills for success. According to Dianna Wallace of the Indiana Association for the Education of Young Children, Indiana has a lot of room for improvement, but the state is starting to focus on the needs of young children. She said Indiana’s new Early Learning Advisory Committee held its inaugural meeting last month.

Double-Duty Racing for Ryan Blaney at Phoenix

Ryan Blaney will have his hands full this weekend as he takes the wheel in the No. 29 Cooper Standard Ford F-150 for Brad Keselowski Racing (BKR) in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) on Friday and the No. 48 AutoZone Ford Mustang for Penske Racing in the NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) on Saturday at Phoenix International Raceway.

This will be Blaney’s second career start at Phoenix International Raceway in the NCWTS. Last season, Blaney finished fifth after starting on the outside pole. His BKR team is 8th in the championship standings.

2013 ARCA Champion to Race at Homestead-Miami Speedway

Frank Kimmel will be wheeling the No. 13 Ansell/Menards Toyota Tundra for ThorSport Racing in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) during NASCAR’s championship weekend at Homestead-Miami Speedway.

Kimmel drove the No. 13 in July in the truck series at Iowa Speedway and came away with a 21st place finish. He hopes to have a good run, but the No. 13 will have to have a good qualifying position to make the show. The No. 13 has run 10 races this season with a couple of different drivers and has fallen out of a guaranteed starting position in the Truck Series’ owners’ points.

Wireman Cases Will Not Go to Trial

Sadie Wireman and Michael Wireman’s cases will not go to trial in Starke Circuit Court.

During a hearing held Tuesday, their defense attorney and the prosecuting attorney presented an agreed recommendation for a sentence for their guilty pleas. The mother and son would be pleading guilty to an amended charge of Possession of a Controlled Substance as a Class D felony. Judge Kim Hall will review the recommended sentence and a sentencing hearing was set for Thursday, Dec. 5 at 9 a.m.

Three Wanted Criminals Arrested in LaPorte County

 
 
Officers with the LaPorte County Metro Operations Unit arrested three people Friday on outstanding criminal warrants.

Officers served an arrest warrant to a suspect in the LaPorte County Jail. Shalovis Robinson, 22, was being held in the jail for violating probation at the time she was served the warrant. She is now being charged with three counts of Dealing a Schedule I Controlled Substance (heroin), a Class B felony.

Chris Bojcev approached the commissioners and explained that he has been having problems with the road that he lives near for some time, and now that the road has been paved, the problems have only increased.

Water Conditioner Presentation Given at Marshall County Commissioners Meeting

  
 
The Marshall County Commissioners entertained information from Dean Freije from High Tech Water Equipment.

Freije explained the benefits of a no-salt conditioner at the Marshall County Jail. He claimed his product can cut down on scale build-up and leave water lines clear of debris. This technology would take the place of a salt conditioner and reportedly be maintenance-free for 10 to 20 years.

The Oregon-Davis School Board met in executive session Monday night where they voted to hold a public hearing on Monday, Nov. 18 at 6:15 p.m. This will be a time for members of the district to voice opinions on the proposed contract of employment for the Superintendent of Schools.

The salary and benefits will be published for review by the public and your support or opposition will be called upon during the hearing.

Oregon-Davis Schools Receive $30,000 Matching School Safety Grant

The Oregon-Davis School Corporation has been allocated $30,000 as part of the Secured Schools Safety Grant Program to allow the school to hire a school resource officer. According to Interim Superintendent Greg Briles, the grant will have a positive impact on the schools.

“We think it’s going to have a great impact on our school. What our plans are, is we are going to have a resource officer now, not only in our junior/senior high school, but we will have one in our elementary school, working with our elementary school students as well,” said Briles.
