Knox Middle School Celebrates Red Ribbon Week

Red Ribbon WeekThis is Red Ribbon Week and the Knox Middle School students will be busy with activities to show that they are drug free.

Today, students will be signing a banner and pledging to be drug and tobacco free. Students and staff will receive a red ribbon to wear and show support of a drug and tobacco free lifestyle.

 On Tuesday, students will plant red tulips at the middle school for National Plant the Promise Week. When the tulips bloom in the spring, it will serve as a reminder to stay drug free.

 Motivational speaker, David Parnell, will speak to the students and staff Wednesday afternoon to about his struggle with drug abuse and his attempt at suicide in which he shot himself in the face. It has required 30 surgeries to repair the damage, but he remains drug free and travels the country to tell everyone of his past troubles to encourage the public to stay drug free.

Hamlet Set to Celebrate 150th Anniversary

Hamlet 150 Years The residents in the town of Hamlet are celebrating the town’s 150th anniversary this Thursday, Oct. 24.

 Clerk-Treasurer Kristina Pitts tells WKVI that a time capsule buried at the town hall decades ago will be opened. Another time capsule will be filled and buried to be opened at another milestone celebration.

 The celebration begins at 5 p.m. CT at the town hall. Hamlet residents will enjoy cake and ice cream along with the reveal of what is in the time capsule. A lot has changed in the area of Hamlet over the past few decades so it should be interesting what was included in the time capsule.

Three-Car Accident Injures Two Near LaCrosse

 
 

A three-car accident injured two on U.S. Highway 421, north of County Road 2300 South near LaCrosse Friday afternoon.

LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called to the scene shortly before 2 p.m. CT and found that a vehicle traveling south on U.S. 421 crossed the center line of the roadway for unknown reasons and hit the axles of a trailer being pulled by a northbound semi. After the vehicle struck the axles, the vehicle hit another car that was traveling north on U.S. 421.

No Issues Reported at NJ-SP Schools

No issues were reported Friday at the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation after an alleged bomb threat was found in a bathroom stall in the high school Thursday afternoon.

Law enforcement officers searched the high school and no device or other threat was found. All precautions were put into place to ensure student safety during school Friday.

Superintendent Lynn Johnson stated that there were no issues and attendance was down for the day on Friday.

All backpacks and bags were checked before school started Friday and officials are taking this situation very seriously. If an investigation produces a suspect, that person or persons could be charged with a felony charge of Intimidation.

Alexander Moy’s Initial Hearing Held in Starke Circuit Court

Alexander Moy pleaded not guilty in an initial hearing in Starke Circuit Court to two counts of Unlawful Sale of Wild Animals, a Class D felony.

Moy, 48, of Chicago, was arrested this week after conservation officers conducted a search at his Hamlet property and found evidence that he was buying wildlife from local residents and selling it to markets and restaurants in Chicago’s Chinatown neighborhood. He’s accused of buying wildlife from members of the public including fish, turtles, raccoons and whitetail deer.

Moy has retained Richard Ballard as his attorney. His first pre-trial conference is set for Dec. 4 and second pre-trial conference is set for Jan. 9. He has bonded out of the Starke County Jail.

Man Charged after Allegedly Purchasing Items on Company Credit Card

 
 
An employee at a business in Marshall County was arrested after an investigation unearthed information that he used a business credit card to purchase non-business related items.

The management at Huff’s Septic and Sewer in Plymouth notified the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department that there were unauthorized purchases on the company’s debit/credit card. The card was only supposed to be used for fuel purchases for the company and it was used to purchase food and other items.

After an investigation, it was found that Jerry Smalley was allegedly misusing the card and he was arrested for Theft, a Class D felony and booked into the Marshall County Jail. The case was forwarded to the Marshall County Prosecutor’s office where an additional charge of Fraud, a Class D felony, was filed.

Town of Winamac to See Reduced Transfer Station Fees

The town of Winamac will see some relief in their transfer station rates, after a county commissioner approached the town board at their meeting to discuss transfer station fees and other matters. According to Town Manager Jim Conner, the commissioner negotiated a new rate with the board, which came out a bit cheaper than it had been in the past. Conner said this new rate will help with their garbage collection expense and other expenses.

Society of Innovators Honors Starke County Farmer

  
 
Starke County is getting its due from the Northwest Indiana Society of Innovators and Ivy Tech Community College. North Judson mint farmer Ed Lambert Jr.’s partnership with Kemin Industries to grow spearmint for use as a natural food preservative was honored with the prestigious Chanute Prize for Team Innovation. Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charlie Weaver says it’s a well-deserved recognition.

New Scam Reported; Never Give Out Personal Information Over Phone

  
 
The Plymouth branch of First Source Bank has reported a new scam in the area that has already victimized a client of the bank. Cheryl Scarberry, operations manager at the bank, said a woman called her and explained that her husband had died just a few weeks ago. Recently, she said she had been called by someone who claimed to be with Social Security and expressed their sympathy at her loss before explaining they wanted to help her get things arranged to get the most benefits that she could from her late husband’s Social Security.

First Death From West Nile Virus Confirmed

 
 
The first death from West Nile virus has been confirmed by the Indiana State Department of Health and the person was from Vigo County.

Jennifer House, DVM, director of zoonotic and environmental epidemiology at the Indiana State Department of Health, said the normal peak season for West Nile Virus is in August and September, but there is still a risk when it’s a little warmer outside and mosquitos are biting.

Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County Double Dare Challenge Set for Sunday

  
 
The Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County Double Dare Challenge will be held tomorrow afternoon as a kick-off event for Red Ribbon Week.

Starke County middle and high school students will come together and answer questions about the harmful effects of alcohol, tobacco and drugs. If a correct answer can not be agreed upon within a team, that team may pass it onto the next team and if that team cannot answer, a physical challenge may ensue. Those usually include some sort of messy challenge between teams and the team who comes out ahead will get the points for that question.

Live Music Event at Knox Community Center Tonight

The Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox will be pumping out some live music tonight as it hosts the Harvest Moon “Big Band” Dancing event from 7 to 9 p.m. Admission for the event is $7 per person, and features live music by Sentimental Journeys.

Darla Cook, mayor’s assistant, said that the city is hoping for a big crowd to have a good time, with admission helping to pay for the band and other expenses. She said there are no sponsors this time, and she hopes to be able to keep hosting these dances which are dependent on admission and attendance. The city has no budget for these events, and only the admissions help to cover the costs.

Marshall County Man Receives 10 Year Prison Sentence

A ten year sentence was handed down to a Marshall County man in Marshall County Superior Court 1 on Thursday.

Judge Robert O. Bowen accepted a plea agreement between the defendant and the state and sentenced David N. Weirick, 54 of Burr Oak, to 10 years on a charge of Manufacturing Methamphetamine, a Class B felony. Weirick admitted in court that he manufactured the drug in his garage located behind his home on State Road 17 in Burr Oak.

If you received prescription drugs from Kentwood Pharmacy in Michigan from 2004 to Nov. 2010, you are asked to contact the Western District of Michigan U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Officials from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of Michigan are handling criminal cases involving suspects in connection with their employment at Kentwood Pharmacy. Kentwood Pharmacy operated retail pharmacies in Grand Rapids and other places in Michigan and they serviced nursing homes, adult foster care homes, and other long-term care facilities throughout Michigan and Northern Indiana.

Winamac Town Board Receives Estimate on Pool Repair

The Winamac Town Board this week received an estimate on the repairs of the Winamac Municipal Pool, and according to Town Manager Jim Conner, it might be a better investment to simply build a new one. Conner said the estimate came back from the Spear Corporation at $513,741 to repair the pool – a hefty price tag spurred by the fact that the pool is 50 years old.

North Judson NAPA Soon to Relocate

  
 
A prominent auto parts supplier in North Judson will soon be relocating to obtain more space for stock and better serve the community. Joe Elder, manager at the North Judson NAPA, told WKVI that the business plans to move operations to the building that once housed North Judson Foods. He said the reason for the move is to be able to hold more stock, as their current location is getting too small to keep necessary items in stock.

Starke County Health Dept. Holding Flu Clinic Oct. 23

 
 
Flu season is approaching and the Starke County Health Department is getting a head start on flu clinics. Adult and children flu vaccinations will be offered at the health department on Oct. 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Health Nurse Frank Lynch explained anyone who is uninsured can visit the health department during that time to get their vaccines before the flu season really hits.
