Bible Study Group Seeks to Purchase Cow for Needy Family Across the Globe

  
 
A bible study group is raising funds to make a donation to a needy family outside the country. According to Jeannie Little, the group, called Thread of Hope, recently purchased a goat from Heifer International to provide milk for a family to drink and sell in order for the family to send their children to school. Little said after their success with that effort, they are now trying to purchase a cow to send to another family in need across the globe.

IRS Offers Deductions for Charitable Travel

 
 
Good news for anyone planning to travel while doing charity work this summer: some of those travel expenses may actually help lower your taxes if you itemize deductions when filing taxes next year. The IRS recently released their summer tax tips, including five tips for those wanting to know about deductions for traveling while serving a charity.

In order to qualify for deductions, you must volunteer to work for a qualified organization, so be sure to ask the charity about its tax-exempt status. To see if a group is qualified, visit IRS.gov and use the Select Check tool.

LaPorte Jail Inmate Charged with Arson

 
 

An inmate has been charged with arson after setting a mattress on fire in his jail cell at the LaPorte County Jail.

After an investigation was conducted, it was found that on July 4, Marzono Shelly reportedly started the fire in his cell in the south end of the jail. 40 inmates were moved from that part of the jail and Shelly was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation. He was later transferred to the Indiana Department of Corrections due to his destructive and dangerous behavior.

Pulaski County Officers Investigate Shooting Incident in Francesville

A suspect remains at large after a shooting incident in Francesville prior to midnight Thursday.

Pulaski County Sheriff Michael Gayer stated that the 911 Dispatch Center received a call from 55-year-old Rhonda Danford of Daviess County that she had been shot by her husband 31-year-old Barry Danford, also of Daviess County at a Francesville residence.

Emergency personnel arrived at the Francesville home and found that Rhonda Danford suffered a single non-life threatening gunshot wound to the arm during a domestic situation. She was transported to Pulaski Memorial Hospital.

Walorski Calls for Permanent Delay of Obamacare Implementation

A local lawmaker is leading the call for President Obama to permanently delay implementation of the Affordable Care Act. U.S. Reps. Jackie Walorski (R-IN) and Rodney Davis (R-IL) led a letter signed by several House Republicans. It was sent following passage by the House of two bills to delay the employer and individual mandates in Obamacare for a year. The administration previously announced a year delay on implementation of the employer mandate. Continue reading

Allen Moore Sentenced on Possession of Heroin Charge

 
 
A man who had heroin in his possession at the time of his arrest was sentenced in Starke Circuit Court Thursday morning.

Allen Moore, 34 of Knox, admitted to Judge Kim Hall that he did possess a Schedule I Controlled Substance, heroin, when he was arrested on April 4 of this year. At first, he tried to deny that heroin was the controlled substance in his possession, but Judge Hall asked him a series of questions and he admitted that it was heroin in his possession.

Marshall County Sheriff’s Department Posts “Most Wanted” List on Facebook

 
 
The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is now utilizing social networking to allow them to get the word out about wanted persons. According to Sheriff Tom Chamberlin, the department has begun posting the “most wanted” list on their Facebook page, giving the community a heads up about those who have a warrant out for their arrest by the department.

“First of all, we want to get out the message of individuals that we have warrants on. We have over 1000 outstanding warrants and we do see a lot of the people that we have warrants are for Failure to Appear warrants for their charges, so to help us in law enforcement, the public are our eyes and ears and we just want to enhance that,” said Chamberlin.

Two Cases Set for Trial in Starke Circuit Court

Two plea agreements were rejected by Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall on Thursday and both cases were set for trial in September.

Michael Wireman, 30 of Medaryville, was set to plead guilty in a plea agreement with the state, but he did not satisfy a portion of the terms of that agreement before the sentencing hearing. In the agreement, it stated that the defendant shall be evaluated with written notice of acceptance into the Starke County Community Corrections home detention program and he did not set up an appointment for evaluation.

The Pulaski County Highway Department is in the process of updating their road inventory through the state. According to Mark Fox, highway superintendent, more state funds will soon make their way to the county’s coffers after he found discrepancies between the state’s road inventory for Pulaski County and the county’s road inventory, totaling 12 miles of road that were not accounted for by the state.

Troy Moses Sentenced in Starke Circuit Court

Troy Moses was sentenced in Starke Circuit Court on Thursday after pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to a charge of Receiving Stolen Property, a Class D felony.

Moses admitted that he received stolen tools and sold them at First Choice Pawn in Knox. He was arrested on March 29 for the crime. The tools were eventually returned so restitution was not requested in this case.

Hamlet Man Arrested on a Warrant for Fraud

A Hamlet man was served with an arrest warrant in a case involving fraud, but he was already incarcerated in the LaPorte County Jail when the warrant was served.

John King, 19 of Hamlet was wanted on a charge of fraud after he and a female suspect had allegedly stolen money out of the account of an acquaintance of the female suspect in LaPorte. That money was reportedly used to buy drugs.

Changes in GED Test Promise More Difficulty, Higher Fee

  
 
The current General Education Development Test is soon to be replaced by a new GED test, meaning old scores will disappear for those who passed only part of their GED test. On top of that, test availability is likely to diminish since many sites currently providing the GED test will not yet offer the new computer-based test, and test fees will also increase with the new testing. Most importantly, the new GED test promises to be more difficult.

F.O.P. to Take 60 Children Shopping

  
 
The members of the Kankakee Valley Fraternal Order of Police #129 will be holding their annual Shop with a Cop event on Sunday, Aug. 4 at Kohl’s in Valparaiso.

Members of the FOP will be helping those students who have been selected to benefit from this program. The store will open early specifically for this endeavor and students can find clothes, backpacks, shoes or any other supplies needed for the start of the new school year. The FOP will be helping 60 children in need this year.

Kid’s Closet Ministry to Hold Drives in Preparation for Pack-a-Backpack Event

  
 
The Kid’s Closet Ministry’s Pack-a-Backpack event is approaching, planned for Aug. 7 and 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. CT at the North Judson United Methodist Church. According to Linda Lewandowski, director of the ministry, they are holding drives to collect school supplies to be given to children in need.

“Kids Closet Ministry is all about kids in need in Starke County. It’s a new ministry that began in the spring that just came from an idea, and so we’re kind of working on it and seeing what we can do,” said Lewandowski.

With the sweltering heat of summer beating down on our backs, the Indiana Department of Child Services is reminding parents to stay alert of the dangers posed by extreme heat on infants, young children, and older youth. While heat-related deaths and illnesses are preventable, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that hundreds of people die every year from excessive heat exposure across the country. Infants, children and the elderly are the most vulnerable to heat, taking only a matter of minutes to develop complications from exposure to extreme heat.

Five Star Sells Out of Twinkies

 
 

Twinkies lasted less than 24 hours on the shelves at Five Star in the Knox Mall. The Hostess treats are sold out, but more will be in stock next week. The gooey goodies made their return after a hiatus prompted by last year’s Hostess Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management purchased the bakery in March for $410 million. CEO C. Dean Metropoulos stated at that time that the company would make $60 million in capital investments to reopen locations throughout this summer, with plans to hire at least 1500 employees to get the snacks back on the shelves.

Amber Lain Sentenced in Starke Circuit Court

 
 
A 22-year-old woman was sentenced in Starke Circuit Court on Wednesday morning on charges of Dealing in Methamphetamine as a Class B felony and Neglect of a Dependent a Class C felony.

Amber Lain admitted to Judge Kim Hall that she was in a home in which she lived with Johnny Mullens that had an active methamphetamine lab, precursors and drug paraphernalia in the presence of her son at the time a search warrant was executed at that residence on March 1. She admitted that she purchased ingredients for the manufacture of methamphetamine but never participated in the actual cooking of the harmful drug. She stated that she was usually at work when the drug was made and her son was usually in the home when that activity occurred.
