Town of Culver Soon to Accept Sidewalk Program Applications
Interested applicants will need the measurements for their sidewalk, curb, or both that they would like to replace in order to complete the application process. If the application is approved, sidewalk work will be reimbursed $2.75 per square foot, curbing at $14 per lineal foot, and curb and sidewalk combinations at $26 per lineal foot.

Choose a Different Easter Present Than Live Pet
You may think that it’s a great idea to give the gift of a chick, duckling or bunny to someone for Easter, but Suzanne Crider from the Starke County Humane Society suggests a different approach.
“We always encourage people, even at Christmas, if you’re talking about giving the gift of a pet, to talk to the people. Maybe give them the money, a gift certificate or a gift certificate to their vet to help pay for some of their vet bills. You’re better off to do that type of thing than you are to give live pets,” stated Crider.
Crider always cautions giving pets as presents as the owners may not be ready for a pet. Talk with the family and possibly take them to the Humane Society to choose their own family pet.
IU Health LaPorte Sleep Services Offers Home Sleep Test Option
If you suffer from excessive sleepiness, loud snoring, frequently wake up with a dry mouth or sore throat, have a hard time staying asleep, suffer from high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes or are overweight, you may suffer from sleep apnea. The condition affects at least 40 million adult Americans. is a common disorder involving abnormal pauses in breathing or extreme shallow breathing during sleep. These respiratory disruptions can last 10 seconds to a few minutes, and may occur multiple times within a rest period. Usually, when normal breathing resumes, the sleeper will snort or snore loudly. Sleep apnea is diagnosed through a sleep study, which usually involves an overnight stay at a sleep center where technicians monitor your sleep. IU Health LaPorte Sleep Services now offers an in-home test as an alternative. It measures breathing patterns, heart rate and oxygen levels during the night and is significantly cheaper than traditional overnight testing in a sleep center. It’s also covered by most insurance plans.

The United States Postal Service will deliver mail this Good Friday, but several governmental offices will be closed in observance of the legal holiday.
The Starke and Pulaski County Courthouses and government buildings, Knox City Hall and the Winamac Town Hall will be closed. The Starke County Public Library in Knox and the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac will only be open from 9 a.m. to noon.
Fatality Accident Investigated in LaPorte County
Investigators from the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department were called to the scene of a fatality accident Thursday afternoon.
The two-vehicle crash involved a passenger car and a garbage truck. Preliminary investigation at the scene found that the driver of the passenger car had apparently failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection of 300 North and Johnson Road. The car entered the intersection and collided with a garbage truck.

Sandbar Arson Still Unsolved
Starke County detectives are continuing in their investigation of the arson committed at the Sandbar at Bass Lake.
Police and fire officials have not released the cause of the fire due to the ongoing investigation.
Five fire departments battled the early morning fire on Dec. 2. It took three hours to extinguish. Investigators from the Indiana State Fire Marshal’s Office returned with an arson ruling several weeks after the incident.

Knox City Police Dept. Reimbursed for Wrecked Cruiser; Still Short One Vehicle
The Knox City Police Department is currently down one police cruiser after an officer struck a deer and totaled the vehicle. Fortunately, Mayor Rick Chambers told the city council this week that the insurance company totaled the vehicle and reimbursed the city $6900 for the 2007 Crown Victoria, but Chambers said that reimbursement isn’t quite enough to cover the cost of a new vehicle.

Governor Mike Pence hailed the passage of the Indiana Works Councils Bill, which he said demonstrates the commitment of Hoosiers to make career and vocational education a priority in every high school. The bill integrates local and state resources by creating regional Indiana Works Councils with membership including representation from employers and educators.

Tax Payments Being Mailed Out Soon; Pay Taxes on Time!
The House of Representatives this week passed legislation that seeks to lessen the tax payment burden on Hoosier homeowners, allowing them the option to pay their property taxes in installments as opposed to a lump sum. The legislation passed the House by a 93-0 vote, bringing it one step closer to becoming law, but several counties in Indiana have already offered this option to residents.
The bill now goes to the desk of Gov. Mike Pence for approval. In the meantime, every county in Indiana is gearing up to send out property tax bills, and it’s keeping the treasurers in Starke and Pulaski counties pretty busy.
Severe Weather Preparedness Week This Week
If you were one of the many Hoosiers that heard the tornado sirens yesterday, don’t worry, you weren’t oblivious to any tornadoes. Rather, statewide tornado drills took place yesterday morning and evening, as the National Weather Service, Indiana State Police, Indiana Broadcasters Association, and various emergency management agencies, emergency response agencies, and sheriff’s departments throughout Indiana tested their warning and communication systems as part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week.
Knox Street Department Prepares for Spring
Jeff Borg said the staff will be doing spring cleaning next week which includes leaf pick-up. They will pick up leaves if they are placed in the street along the curb and not in the alley. Brush and limbs will be picked up each Thursday.
NJ-SP Kindergarten Registration Set for April 16
North Judson-San Pierre kindergarten registration is Tuesday, April 16 from 5–7 p.m. at the elementary school.
You are asked to take your child’s birth certificate, immunization record and Social Security card when they register your child. Both of you will be able to visit kindergarten classrooms and meet kindergarten teachers.
If you are unable to attend this registration, visit the school office to register your child.
You child must be the age of five on or before Aug. 1 to enter kindergarten.
Doctor’s Day Celebrated at IU Health Starke Hospital
The National Doctor’s Day was first celebrated in 1991, and it is a day set aside to recognize the work of doctors.
Wednesday’s celebration at IU Health Starke Hospital was an opportunity for colleagues and friends to say “thank you” for the services provided to area residents.
