It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a month dedicated to the collaboration of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to services. In light of that, Sarah Coil, communications director at Pulaski Memorial Hospital, said the hospital is offering a great deal for women throughout the month of October.

Dermody Named Indiana Bankers Association Legislator of the Year

A state representative whose district includes portions of the WKVI listening area was recently honored as the 2013 Legislator of the Year by the Indiana Bankers Association. Representative Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, was honored during the association’s recent annual convention for his role in passing a bill to reduce the Financial Institutions Tax and protect the Public Deposit Insurance Fund. Indiana banks pay into the fund, which protects local taxpayers. Dermody said in a statement he’s “honored to receive the IBA’s Legislator of the Year Award” for his work in “sensibly lowering Hoosiers’ taxes.”

Gas Prices on the Way Down

 
 
Gas prices saw the largest monthly decline in September since October of 2012.

The national average price has fallen for 29 days in a row, the longest consecutive decline since April of 2012.

Gas prices in September averaged $3.52 per gallon, which was the lowest national average for the month since 2010 and 31 cents per gallon cheaper than the monthly average a year ago. Special Event Planned for Saturday to Recognize Breast Cancer Awareness Month

 
 
IU Health Starke Hospital and WKVI Radio are urging you to “think pink” this October. One way to do that is to participate in a 5K race/2 mile walk this Saturday, Oct. 5 at Knox High School.

Registration for the event begins at 3 p.m. and the race begins at 4 p.m. At 3:30 p.m., a celebration will be held to recognize all breast cancer survivors. Continue reading →

Demolition in Knox Going Smoothly, Said SCEDF Director

The demolition of the structures previously located at 2 and 4 N. Main St. in Knox is going well, according to the executive director of the Starke County Economic Development Foundation. Charles Weaver told WKVI that there have not been any issues that have developed and the demolition is going smoothly, despite the workers taking a few days off last week to handle other items.

“The demolition has been going very well. We’re pleased with the progress that has been made; we’re pleased that the outside wall, specifically the north wall, was taken down without any damage to the adjoining remaining structure. The sidewalks have been protected during demolition; the little ornamental trees have been protected during the demolition, so we’re very pleased with what’s going on so far,” Weaver explained.

Community Services of Starke County Doesn’t Anticipate Federal Funding Problems

Fortunately, at Community Services of Starke County, Executive Director Joan Haugh said she doesn’t expect the shutdown, if it does occur, to affect her funding much.

Man Arrested After Rollover Accident

 
 

A man was arrested early Sunday morning after being involved in a roll-over accident in Marshall County.

Deputies from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department were called to the area of U.S. 6 and 1C Road. Michael Lambert, 24, reportedly lost control of his vehicle which caused him to leave the roadway and roll over.

During the investigation, Lambert was found to be intoxicated. He was arrested and booked into the Marshall County Jail on a preliminary charge of Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated.

One Arrested on Drug Charges in Marshall County

 
 
A suspect was arrested Friday in Marshall County after a traffic stop on Jefferson Street.

A deputy from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department pulled over a car driven by Matthew Bailey as Bailey was speeding. The officer learned that Bailey was operating his vehicle on a suspended driver’s license. The deputy also reportedly found a significant amount of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

Matthew Bailey was taken into custody on possession charges and booked into the Marshall County Jail. His bond was set at $1,500.

Juvenile Charged with Burglary and Theft

 
 
A 14-year-old boy has been charged with burglary and theft after an incident over the weekend.

LaPorte police received a call that three boys were going up and down an alleyway on F Street. Upon closer observation, the victim told police that two of the boys were riding bicycles that belonged to them. They allegedly took the bicycles from the area of the victim’s garage. It was determined that the boys had entered the unlocked garage and removed two girl’s bicycles.

Scammers Preying on Confusion Over Health Care Changes

  
 
Scam artists are taking advantage of changes in health care and open enrollment for those on Medicare in an attempt to steal from senior citizens. Indiana Senior Medicare Patrol Program Director Nancy Stone says current Medicare beneficiaries should not be getting calls about signing up for health care plans.

“What we always tell them is to just hang up. Don’t give out any personal information. Medicare will never call you. ‘Cause that’s what they say – sometimes they say they’re from Medicare – they want to confirm their information,” said Stone.

Mayor’s Office Accepting SCILL Center Leaf Raking Applications

In an effort to promote the importance of lending a helping hand to the community, the SCILL Center students in Knox will begin raking leaves in the near future when the foliage begins to fall from the trees. The community project focuses on helping those who are elderly or physically handicapped as the students will rake their yards free of charge on a to-be-determined Saturday.

Students will rake up to 15 yards, clearing them of leaves, on a first-come, first-served basis. No date has been set for the project as the leaves have not yet begun to fall, but those who sign up to have their yards raked will be notified via phone of the project date.

Prospectus and Achievement Night This Thursday

 
 

The Starke County Economic Development Foundation will host the Prospectus and Achievements Night on Thursday, Oct. 3 with featured speaker Scott Duerkop, vice president at Jones Lang LaSalle, a real estate brokerage firm in Chicago. He will shed light on what challenges a small rural community faces when it comes to attracting industry.

In addition to his presentation, Kemin Food Technologies and Edward Lambert Farms will be recognized for having been named one of five finalists for The Society of Innovator’s Northwest Indiana Chanute Prize for their team innovation in North Judson. The team uses innovative growing and post-harvest processes for patented spearmint varieties unique to the county that has preservation and antioxidant properties used in products world-wide.

Starke County Youth Club Federal Funding in Jeopardy

  
 

The main source of funding for the Starke County Youth Club is in jeopardy as members of Congress continue to squabble over a federal budget for the next fiscal year. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says the House budget proposal slashes money used to provide services for 600 youngsters in grades K-12 in Starke County.

“The threat is our largest source of funding, which is the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program, will be eliminated, so we really are encouraging everyone to reach out to their legislators and talk to them about why children, youth in this country are important, why after school programs are important and to encourage them to keep funding for our kids and our communities,” said Szakonyi.

A networking infrastructure upgrade is in the works for the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation, and while it comes with a hefty price tag, Superintendent Lynn Johnson said it’s worth it to provide the best educational experience possible for students. With more and more technology being used by students, teachers, administrators and everyone else on a daily basis, the networking infrastructure in place throughout the corporation is no longer able to suit their needs, and the need to upgrade has become obvious.

Starke Commissioners to Hold Three Meetings Thursday

  
 
The Starke County Commissioners have three meetings planned for Thursday, only one of which is open to the public. The first meeting, an executive session closed to the public, will take place at 9 a.m. to discuss a personnel matter pursuant to Indiana Code 5-14-1.5-6.1 part (b) (6) (B). The code allows the commissioners to call an executive session “to discuss, before a determination, the individual’s status as an employee, a student, or an independent contractor,” who is a physician or a school bus driver.

The second meeting will take place at 9:30 a.m., also closed to the public, to discuss strategy regarding the purchase or lease of real property, pursuant to Indiana Code 5-14-1.5-6.1 part (b) (2) (D).

The final meeting, scheduled for 10:30 a.m., will be a special meeting open to the public in the annex building meeting room at 53 E. Mound St. in Knox. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the 2014 employee health insurance.
