4/16/12 North Judson Police were made aware recently of an old scam going through the area again. A resident on Lincoln Avenue received what appeared to be a legitimate check in the mail for around $3,800.00 from a nationally-known insurance company. They were asked to deposit the check and wire $1,900.00 back to the company to receive the remainder of their money. Whether it be a balance on a claim or money for winning a contest, you should never wire money to anyone to claim a prize or finalize a business deal. These are scams. When you deposit the check and then wire the money, the check will bounce and your money will already be claimed on the other end and you’re out your money! Never send or wire anyone or any company cash if you are not sure of whom you are dealing with and if you didn’t initiate the transaction. “Talk with your bank or call the police if in doubt,” said North Judson Town Marshal Doug Vessley. He added, “Be careful and wise.
