The Knox Board of Works is going after unpaid fines on a couple of properties. Board members voted Wednesday to attach a $5,000 civil penalty on 401 East Lake Street as a special assessment on its taxes, if it isn’t brought into compliance by September 3.

The Knox Board of Works continues pushing for the demolition of a garage at 204 West Bender Street. A demolition order was issued more than two years ago, but owner Lucia Valladares argued that the structure was viable and contractors could have it repaired in two weeks. She continued appealing the order through the court system, until the Indiana Court of Appeals dismissed the matter earlier this month.

The owners of 401 East Lake Street in Knox could have to pay a $2,500 penalty, after city officials say they failed to make necessary repairs for the past year. Director of Building and Code Compliance Kenny Pfost told the board of works last month that he issued an order to repair the home last September, after getting numerous complaints about birds flying in and out through holes in the walls. Specifically, the owners were asked to finish the exterior siding, roof, and roof framing.
