An appraisal of the Pleasant View Rest Home in Winamac will be conducted for a potential real estate sale.

Two appraisals will be sought from local licensed appraisers to complete the task. Pulaski County Commissioner Terry Young will be contacting the contractors to set up the procedure.

The commissioners also agreed to hold an auction to get rid of the contents inside the county home. It was also suggested that other unwanted items from county departments be included in the auction. An auction date has not been finalized.

Pulaski County Commissioners Vote to Vacate County Road

A county road will be vacated in Pulaski County.

Terry Ruff, who is the acting General Foreman at the Pulaski County Highway Department, said the county is spending a lot of resources on the dirt road at 1150 West between 900 South and 1000 South that basically acts as a path between two feuding property owners. Ruff is leery of accidents on the road and who would be responsible if there’s an issue. He said it’s not even suitable to plow.

Work Continues to Find Placement of County Home Residents

Three residents remain at the Pleasant View Rest Home.

Attorney Jere Humphrey told WKVI News that one resident will be moving out of the facility next week while two others should be placed by the end of March. March 31 is forecast as the last day of operations at the county home.

Humphrey was hired by the commissioners to take care of finalizing plans and paperwork in order to close the county home. The Pulaski County Council voted last year by a majority to exclude funds for the Pleasant View Rest Home in this year’s budget. In December, the commissioners had no choice but to approve the closure of the facility due to lack of funding. It was learned that the county had to keep the county home open until the residents could find alternate housing. That deadline is March 31.

Repairs Almost Done at Justice Center, Focus Turns to Courthouse

Pulaski County CourthouseThe long-awaited repairs at the Pulaski County Justice Center are nearly complete.

Maintenance Director Jeff Johnston told the commissioners this week that the water softeners and the water heaters are installed, and all of the old units have been hauled away. Johnston said the HVAC systems should arrive this week or next week. He will coordinate with offices in the justice center for that equipment to be properly installed. The new control system will be added after that, but Johnston said that could be a while yet.

Pleasant View Rest Home Nominated for National Register of Historic Places

The Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County has received the nomination to be in the National Register of Historic Places.

Letters of support were sought by the Division of State Historic Preservation and Archaeology in October to place the structure on the register. In a public meeting held at the Pulaski County Courthouse in November, Paul Diebold, a member of the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Historical Preservation and Archaeology Committee, said he had never seen so much support for a effort such as this.

Pulaski County Commissioners Approve Highway Department Appointments

The Pulaski County Commissioners voted 2-1 to place an employee into the general foreman position at the highway department.

Traditionally, the superintendent appoints the employees in his department, but Commissioner Bud Krohn, Jr. said he wanted a “political change”.

“It’s time for a change. I got elected, and that’s what I’d like to do,” said Krohn.

Pulaski County Attorney to Hold Meeting with Counsel to Discuss County Home

A meeting is set for today to move forward with the closure of the Pleasant View Rest Home in Pulaski County.

Pulaski County Attorney Kevin Tankersley will be meeting with an attorney in Plymouth to discuss the matter and to see if the attorney would be willing to take over legal issues in the closure of the county home. Tankersley will not be taking over the legal issues in this matter as it was thought an outside agency would be a better choice in the process. If the attorney agrees to work with the county, the commissioners would need to approve a retainer for the attorney’s services.

Handful of Pulaski County Offices to Close Early for Christmas

Pulaski County CourthouseThe Pulaski County Commissioners denied a request from Auditor Shelia Garling to withdraw a former appeal to close offices early on Christmas Eve.

Garling had made the request in an earlier meeting as she had gotten some feedback from fellow department heads asking to close the office early to accommodate plans for Christmas. The commissioners approved the request with the understanding that the workers who leave early use remaining PTO time or forego those hours.

County Home Eliminated from 2015 Pulaski County Budget

The residents at the Pleasant View Rest Home are going to have to find another place to live.

The Pulaski County Council last night approved a motion to remove funding for the county home from the 2015 budget.

The issue of bills not being collected and the high amount of money it will take to keep the building functional and up to code were the main reasons for the decision. County Council President Jay Sullivan said that he will notify county home board president Bob White of the status change and to set things in motion to get the residents a new place of residency.

Starke County Sheriff’s Department Gets New K9

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department has sold one of its K9s to Starke County.

Sheriff Michael Gayer told WKVI News that the K9 officer resigned abruptly and no other officer in the department wanted to resume the responsibility of K9 “Terror”. He reached out to other departments to see if a K9 could help them. One department that expressed interest was the Starke County Sheriff’s Department. The K9 and a kennel were sold to Starke County for $8,500 about two weeks ago.

The Pulaski County commissioners discussed the K9 situation Monday night during their meeting where Commissioner Terry Young was not pleased with the amount of money for which the K9 was sold. Commission President Larry Brady gave the sheriff the option of including the vehicle with the K9 and the kennel at a price of $17,000 or leave the vehicle for use by a department head. The vehicle stayed with the county.

Auditor Shelia Garling told Commissioners Larry Brady and Terry Young that she’s done a lot of research with outsourcing the payroll. In talking with other auditors, she’s found that it could be a bigger hassle than needed.
