The Culver Community School Corporation will soon begin the hunt for a new superintendent as the current superintendent, Brad Schuldt, announced that he will be retiring at the end of December. Schuldt and School Board President Ryan Sieber recently discussed what tasks need to be done to replace Schuldt and the pair explained new state laws regarding approval of a superintendent’s contract.

Culver’s Comprehensive Plan Meeting Didn’t Draw the Crowd Expected

Last night’s vision meeting regarding Culver’s comprehensive plan project didn’t have the turnout that Town Manager David Schoeff was expecting, but he said it was still a fun and productive meeting. Schoeff explained that about 25 people showed up to discuss the comprehensive plan to allow officials to get an idea of where the residents of the town see their community developing towards the future. Residents identified places in and around town that can be developed and gave their insight on what residential areas, commercial areas, or infrastructure aspects could be improved.

Culver to Host Vision Meeting for Comprehensive Plan Tonight

With summer finally here, the town of Culver will host a vision meeting tonight regarding the town’s soon-to-be-drafted comprehensive plan. Town Manager David Schoeff explained they’re working on gathering information to aid them in drafting the plan, and to that end, the town is holding a vision meeting at 6:30 p.m. ET at the Culver High School in the cafeteria. He said he’s looking forward to this meeting as it will give town officials an idea of how the community sees Culver growing for the future.

Center for Culver History Hosting Kurt Vonnegut Exhibit

  
 
The Center for Culver History is hosting a traveling exhibit focusing on Kurt Vonnegut and a local exhibit curated by the museum focusing on the four generations of Vonneguts who built, worked and played on the east shore of Lake Maxinkuckee. Through the end of July, the museum is inviting visitors of all ages to view the “Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., and the Vonneguts of the East Shore” exhibit.

Movie to be Filmed in Culver This Summer

  
 
A movie entitled “Little Savages” is expected to be filmed in Culver this summer.

According to an article by Jeff Kenney with the Culver Citizen, the movie plot involves children by the name of Savage who befriend two outsiders. They go on a mission to find hidden treasure somewhere in the town of Culver. Their quest is interrupted by bullies who are looking for the same treasure. Who will be the winner in this adventure?

Culver Schools to Participate in Summer Food Service Program

 
 
Culver Community Schools have announced that they will be participating in the Summer Food Service Program, providing free meals to children 18 years of age and under and to adults enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled. The program was created to serve nutritious meals to children when the National School Lunch and School Breakfast Program meals are not available.

The Culver Community School Corporation is preparing for summer break which kicks off on May 30 but the corporation still has some work to do over the summer while the students enjoy their time away from school. Superintendent Brad Schuldt said the school board approved three resolutions at their meeting Monday night, beginning the process of selling bonds to finance a project at Culver Elementary School.

Schuldt said the corporation is looking to improve every single classroom in the building by providing better temperature control and indoor air quality through the heating, air conditioning, and ventilation system. Schuldt said the project is expected to start as soon as the school year comes to a close, with the work to be wrapped up before the beginning of the next school year.

The Culver Community School Board at their meeting Monday night began the process of reducing force at their corporation – essentially cutting down on the number of employees. The board unanimously adopted a resolution to cut five teachers at the end of this school year, but Superintendent Brad Schuldt said the board has not yet decided which five staff members will be let go.

Schuldt said the resolution merely confirms that the corporation will perform a reduction in force by five teachers, but no specifics have been decided – that is, the board has not made a decision as to who will be cut nor what buildings will be affected. He said the board will know by their meeting in mid-June which teachers’ contracts will be canceled by the board.

Man Fishing at Bass Lake Cited

 
 

A Culver man was cited for violations by a Indiana Conservation Officer.

William D. Corey III, 55, was bank fishing at Bass Lake when a conservation officer checked his catch for the day. The officer found 45 crappie in his possession which is nearly twice than the allowed bag limit of 25.

Culver High School BPA Students Preparing for Nationals

 
 

The Culver Community High School Business Professionals of America members are gearing up to attend the BPA National Leadership Conference in Orland, Fla., May 8 – 12. Two students will be attending the conference, having advanced to Nationals from the State Leadership Conference in Indianapolis.

Justin Croy earned second place in Computer Modeling at State while Janele VanDePutte placed fourth at State to advance to the National competition at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort.

Culver Kindergarten Roundup Scheduled This Evening

 
 
Parents of prospective Culver Elementary School kindergarten students are invited to attend the annual kindergarten roundup this evening at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria. In order to be eligible for kindergarten, a child must turn 5 on or before Aug. 1. This is an informational meeting for parents, and children do not need to attend. School officials will share information with parents about required health records, forms needed for registration, kindergarten screening, Indiana curriculum standards and programs available for kindergarteners. Parents should bring a copy of their child’s birth certificate to verify the date of birth and a copy of the child’s immunization records. The early registration is critical for school officials to plan for the upcoming year’s kindergarten program. Parents who cannot attend are asked to call Culver Elementary at (574) 842-3389 or (574) 542-4017 to make other arrangements.

Marshall County Authorities Investigate Culver Suicide

  
 

The Marshall County Coroner’s Office and Police Department are investigating an apparent Tuesday afternoon suicide in a Culver cemetery. Deputy Coroner Bridgett Hite says Margurite C. Quimby, 56, of Claypool, telephoned the 911 dispatch center, told them she was going to take her own life, and hung up. Dispatchers tried unsuccessfully to call her back and sent officers to Poplar Grove Church just east of Culver on State Road 10. Officers found Quimby’s body in the cemetery behind the church. Quimby left a note in her car with information as to who to contact, according to Hite, who says foul play is not suspected. Quimby’s family has been notified.

When you audition, you will be asked to sing a song of your choice and you will read from the script.

Spring Turkey Hunting Season Opens April 24

 
 

The Turkey Tracks event begins next week, which Indiana Conservation Officer Keith Wildeman says is two days after the start of the spring turkey hunting season.

“The regular season will start Wednesday, April 24 and run two-and-a-half weeks to May 12,” said Wildeman. “The bag limit for the spring season is one bearded or male turkey. Hens can sometimes have beards too which makes them legal.”

Culver Schedules Kindergarten Roundup

Culver Elementary SchoolParents of prospective kindergarten students are invited to the Culver Community School Corporation kindergarten round-up event next week.

It’s scheduled Tuesday, April 25 at 6 p.m. ET in the Culver Elementary School cafeteria. Youngsters must turn 5 on or before Aug. 1, 2013 in order to be eligible to start school in the fall. Children do not need to attend this meeting with their parents, as this is merely an informational session. School officials do stress that the early registration is essential in the planning for next year’s kindergarten program.

Marshall County Commissioners Approve GIS Data Request

Culver Town Manager, David Schoeff, went before the Marshall County Commissioners Monday morning to request the use of GIS data in the Town of Culver’s compilation of a comprehensive plan.

Houseal-Lavigne of Chicago is working with the town to develop the plan and the data needed includes parcel information. GIS data for the parcels inside town limits and the two-mile jurisdiction are requested along with some county data.

Deep Study at Lake Maxinkuckee Postponed

A deep study to determine the amount of nutrients, algae and other elements in Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, and its history, has been postponed to May 13-15.

The U.S. Geological Survey out of Kansas will conduct the study which the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Council (LMEC) predicts will make officials better understand how much change the lake has undergone since its last deep study done in 1984. One issue the scientists will be looking at is the amount of phosphorous in the lake.

The town of Culver is hosting a community workshop on April 22, the first of several face-to-face community outreach events scheduled throughout the comprehensive planning process. The purpose of this workshop is to allow residents and businesses throughout Culver to make their voice heard regarding what they value most about the community and the issues that they would like to see addressed.
