Around 3 a.m. on Saturday, February 2nd, the Indiana State Police was called to Starke Hospital in Knox to conduct an investigation into the death of an inmate.
According to the initial investigation by ISP Detective Brian Kubiak, during processing into the Starke County Jail, 41-year-old Steven Richie, of North Judson, reportedly removed a clear plastic baggie from his pants pocket, containing an unknown white chalky substance, and allegedly put it into his mouth. The death of a 70-year-old Hudson Lake man is being investigated by the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies say they found the body of Vernon Ringler in a pond a few hundred yards from his home Wednesday morning. A relative and caretaker had reported him missing, after she wasn’t able to find him in his home that morning.
The Knox City Police Department is conducting a death investigation after a 59-year-old woman was found unresponsive in the Oak Valley Apartments.
Officers were called out Thursday evening to Bertha Clabaugh’s apartment and found her to be deceased. Detectives say that no foul play is suspected at this time, but an autopsy is scheduled for this afternoon to determine the exact cause of death. They are currently interviewing witnesses and following protocol in this type of case.
Knox Police Detectives are still trying to piece together what happened Sunday afternoon that caused a 3-year-old boy to eventually die of a skull fracture. At this point, police and the Prosecutor’s Office are not releasing the names of the boy or the parents.
