What could become one of the United States’ largest solar farms broke ground Thursday in Bass Lake. The 13,000-acre Mammoth Solar Project is being developed by a partnership involving Israeli energy company Doral Group. Governor Eric Holcomb, Israeli Ambassador Gilad Erdan, and numerous state and local officials converged on the Melody Drive-In for the groundbreaking ceremony.

The developer of the Mammoth Solar project continues to line up a buyer for its electricity. AEP Energy will buy power under a long-term purchase agreement with Doral Renewables, LLC announced this week for the second phase of the project. An agreement for the first phase was executed in April.

Governor Holcomb’s trip to Israel last month apparently included a meeting with one of the companies behind Starke and Pulaski counties’ Mammoth Solar project. A press release sent on behalf of Israel-based renewable energy developer Doral Group says the governor had a chance to meet with the project’s Israeli stakeholders.
