The Eastern Pulaski School Board will be discussing bids for the upcoming building renovation projects in a work session beginning at 5 p.m. ET tonight. The projects include the construction of secure entrances at the schools, upgrades of classrooms and a new gymnasium floor. The project is estimated at $14 million.
Eastern Pulaski Schools and the Culver Community School Corporation are under a soft lockdown.
Eastern Pulaski School Superintendent Dan Foster told WKVI News that an individual in the community had threatened to harm himself. Foster said that the school is simply taking a precaution where all of the doors have been locked at all of the buildings. Students will not be leaving the buildings for recess or any student aid projects.
It was a general threat and not a specific threat to the school or any students or staff at the school, according to Foster. Foster stated that it was a safety precaution.
Students from several organizations at Winamac Community High School took time to volunteer for the Salvation Army during the holiday season. Principal Rick DeFries says they raised a significant amount of money for the organization during their annual bell ringing campaign. Of the $5,600 raised, the students brought in $2,500. DeFries told the Eastern Pulaski School Board an estimated 10 groups raised that amount of money in 20 hours.
Longtime Eastern Pulaski School Board member Joe Cunningham will continue serving as the president of that body after the board reorganized for the year. Deke Demarco was elected vice-president, and Terri Johnston was chosen secretary of the board. Continue reading
Plans for the $14 million renovation project at Eastern Pulaski Schools are nearly finished. Superintendent Dan Foster says the architect is putting the final touches on things. The Pulaski County Community Development Commission may apply for a state grant to provide job skills training to high school students. County economic development director Nathan P. Origer says funds are available through the Career and Technical Education Innovative Curriculum Grant program to set up industrial repair and maintenance training programs at Winamac Community and West Central High Schools. An Eastern Pulaski School Board member was honored Monday evening for 22 years of service. John Kwiatkowski is retiring from the board at the end of this year. He served two stints on the board as the representative from Franklin Township. The first was from 1968 until 1978. During that time the elementary school was built. Continue reading

The Eastern Pulaski School Board did not make a decision last night on the proposed $14 million building renovation project slated to start in 2015. Superintendent Dan Foster says they do not want to hurry a project of this magnitude. He adds they want to make sure they get exactly what they want in the end. The members of the Eastern Pulaski School Board will approve action items concerning contracts and the building project in a meeting this afternoon.
After the last special meeting, the board members met in an extended work session to fine tune the building project that includes all buildings to upgrade them to future education standards. Security upgrades will be done as well as classroom improvements and heating and cooling.
The Eastern Pulaski School Board met for a lengthy work session after Monday afternoon’s public hearing concerning the rehabilitation projects at the elementary, middle and high schools.
The board approved paperwork to move forward in updating heating and cooling systems at the school buildings, replacing gym floors, updating all of the classrooms for technology purposes and educational settings, plus creating a more secure entrance at each building for the safety of students and staff members. Energy saving measures are also planned. The anticipated combined project cost is $14 million.
The Eastern Pulaski School Board members held a 1028 hearing yesterday afternoon to give those in attendance a scope of an extensive project in the works at all three of the schools to begin in March of 2015 and to end in October of 2016.
The board members did a walking tour of the buildings and made the collective decision to update and modernize the schools. Technology is the wave of the future and the school board felt it necessary to recognize that fact and to create the infrastructure necessary for that need moving forward with curriculum and educational space.
The Starke County Economic Development Foundation (SCEDF) is looking to bring life back into the vocational building on the Oregon-Davis school campus to begin an automation robotics and equipment maintenance program as an extension of vocational programs through the SCILL Center.
According to Ron Gifford, the SCEDF will assist in seeking a way to fund the program full-time and to acquire equipment. A pilot program started this year with several students in the eighth grade through the tenth grade enrolled in the program.
Trial and appellate judges will be talking to students about the U.S. Constitution on Wednesday, Sept. 17 in recognition of the anniversary of the signing of the document.
The judges will be passing out pocket constitutions for the students to keep. Judges will also discuss how the jury process works and why it is such an important component of citizenship. The project may include a public service announcement about jury duty, a discussion about statistics on state and county jury trials and a mock jury selection.
