State of Pulaski County Economy Addressed by CDC Director

Pulaski County Economic DevelopmentThe state of the Pulaski County economy is a mixed bag according to CDC Executive Director Nathan Origer.

During Tuesday evening’s Pulaski County Economic Development Summit, Origer gave his State of the Pulaski County Economy Address. In it, he highlighted several of the positive steps the county has taken to build capacity for businesses, and to improve the quality of life within the county.

Higher Wages Suggested To Cover Starke County Residents’ Basic Needs

  
 

It takes a bit more pay to support a family in Starke County than some of the surrounding areas.

That’s according to data in a report released by the Indiana Institute for Working Families. A team of researchers from the University of Washington helped develop the standard which attempts to define salary levels for residents to attain self-sufficiency.

The former First Farmers Bank and Trust building on Lane Street in North Judson will soon be the town hall.
The former First Farmers Bank and Trust building on Lane Street in North Judson will soon be the town hall.

North Judson has solidified the route that commercial trucks can take in the community.

The ordinance specifies the path to enter the community and reach the industrial park through State Road 10 without traveling on residential streets. North Judson has undertaken the effort to help preserve road quality and prevent other traffic impediments.

Change to FAA Drone Rules Could Benefit Indiana Economy

1The Federal Aviation Administration is scheduled to release proposed regulations for the commercial use of unmanned aircraft systems (U.A.S), commonly referred to as drones. As of right now, the use of drones is limited to hobbyists and a small number of researchers, businesses and government agencies. The new rules are expected to cover altitude limits and license requirements and will open the doors to using drones in a number of new ways.

Congressman Joe Donnelly was recently asked what he’s been hearing about the economic front.

“On the economic front, we are waiting on the report from the Super Committee which we’re hoping will be able to help us reduce the deficit, while at the same time, allowing us to continue to grow our economy,” commented Donnelly. “We saw that the jobless report shows the lowest number of jobless claims in seven months so it’s a step-by-step process, but we’re hoping that our economy gets stronger.”

Gas Prices Rise to $3.19 a Gallon

Gas prices spiked ten cents this week when prices hit $3.19 a gallon.

“We’re kind of seeing a little bit of a combination of things when it comes to crude oil prices,” said Don Good of the Good Oil Company in Winamac. “It’s combination of the weak dollar, we’ve kind of talked about that crude oil is valued in dollars, so when we do something in our economy that makes the dollar weaker, like the $900 billion tax relief plan that added to the deficit, that made the dollar fall. Since the dollar is the currency that they value crude in around the world, it makes crude oil more expensive for us and less expensive for other countries. India’s and China’s economies have really picked up. I think they’re running at about a six or eight percent increase compared to where we are struggling. As a matter of fact, China just passed us as being the largest consumer of petroleum in the world. They’re consumption of oil is going up while ours is pretty stagnant. Right now the markets are focusing on their use than ours.”
