A stretch of State Road 39 will officially be dedicated in memory of a fallen Pulaski County sheriff’s deputy tomorrow. Shadron K. Bassett was killed in a single-vehicle crash on State Road 39 near Pulaski County Road 300 North while responding to a call on October 7, 2005.

The Indiana Department of Transportation was recently urged to memorialize fallen Pulaski County Sheriff’s Deputy Shadron Kiley “Shad” Bassett by naming a stretch of State Road 39 in his honor.

“The American dream is still alive and well” was one of the several the messages which brought loud rounds of applause from attendees of the 2015 Starke County Republican Lincoln Day dinner at Bass Lake Saturday evening. Speaking was Diego Morales, a Guatemala native, who is the the Director of Community Affairs for the Indiana Governor’s office. He added, to be successful, it was important for him to learn the English language, adopt American culture and to take advantage of the nation’s education system.
The senator will discuss bills that affect business in Pulaski County and other items in the legislature as well.

Sen. Ed Charbonneau, R-Valparaiso, and Rep. Doug Gutwein, R-Francesville, both received perfect scores from the IMA. Rep. Tom Dermody, R-LaPorte, scored a 95.4 percent, and Sen. Jim Arnold, D-LaPorte, ranked the highest among Democrats in the Senate with an 83 percent pro-manufacturing voting record.
A crowd packed into the Bass Lake Property Owner’s Association building, filling up the seats and taking up every space available in the parking lot to attend the Starke County Republican Lincoln Day Dinner. With a number of prominent community members in attendance, including government representatives at the county, state, and federal levels, including Congresswoman Jackie Walorski, those in attendance got a solid idea of what is happening legislatively.
The town of North Judson received help from state representatives Douglas Gutwein and Tom Dermody, as well as Senator Ed Charbonneau and INDOT Representative Robert Alderman with the goal of obtaining funds to proceed with the repairs to the railroad crossing on U.S. 30 near Hanna. Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry said the town has been working on getting the project under way since last summer.
A Meet the Candidates Night is set for Wednesday, Oct. 3 from 6–8 p.m. at the Knox Community Center.
Candidates will be allowed five minutes to speak during the event. In the U.S. Senate race, a representative for Democratic U.S. Senate–candidate Joe Donnelly–will appear along with Libertarian candidate Andrew “Andy” Horning. A representative for Brendan Mullen will appear on his behalf as he campaigns for the U.S. Representative District 2 seat. Libertarian U.S. Representative District 2 candidate Joseph Ruiz will attend.
Hoosiers who enjoy hand-to-hand combat from their legislators certainly have viewed the recent battles in the Indiana House of Representatives with joy.
State Senator Ed Charbonneau (R-Valparaiso) was asked if such animosity could break out in that chamber. Charbonneau said he didn’t think so and thought that was good. He said attacking each other day after day wasn’t good.
