COVID-19 Variants Picking Up Steam, According to State Health Commissioner

Indiana’s state health commissioner is warning Hoosiers not to behave as if the pandemic is over. “We have said before that we are in a race between the vaccine and the variants. Unfortunately, right now, the variants are picking up steam,” Dr. Kris Box said during Wednesday’s press conference. “Indiana has now reported 137 cases of the U.K. B.1.1.7 variant.”

Knox Mayor Confident that Summer Events Can Be Held if Residents Get Vaccinated

Knox Mayor Dennis Estok is confident that summer events and programs could make a comeback, but only if residents do their part. “I know there’s people that refuses to get the vaccine and all of that, but if everybody does their part and we get the vaccine, I guarantee you, we can have all of our events,” Estok told the city council Tuesday.

Gov. Holcomb Sticking with Mask Order As Some States Lift Theirs

While some states are lifting their mask mandates, Governor Holcomb wants Indiana to continue on its current path. “In regards to Texas and Mississippi . . . good on them,” Holcomb said during Wednesday’s COVID-19 press conference. “They’ve got great leaders. But I’m looking at very local information. I’m very Indiana-centric about this, and I’m really happy about the path that we’re on to get to that light at the end of the tunnel.”

Getting COVID-19 Relief Could Depend on Mask Enforcement for Knox Businesses

The City of Knox hopes to be able to give more COVID-19 relief to local businesses, but whether they get it may depend on how well they enforce the mask order. Mayor Dennis Estok told the city council Tuesday that he plans to apply for the third round of the state’s COVID-19 Response Program. “I really think in our application that one of the questions that is going to be is, ‘Are you following the guidelines, the mask mandate, the social distancing, and all of that?’” Estok said.

Governor: Wearing Masks Lets Businesses Stay Open

Wearing masks not only keeps people healthy but it’s also what’s allowing businesses to stay open, according to Governor Eric Holcomb. “You mask up to stay open,” he said during Wednesday’s COVID-19 press conference. “If you care about Main Street, if you care about the economy, you only have to look around into some other places that are doing the opposite, closing down. And so I don’t like them either, but it’s just a fact of life right now. And it is a fact of, underscore three times, life!”
