Local firefighters are urging residents to do their part to prevent brush fires. “We’re starting to get into that fall weather, brush fire awareness,” North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Chief Joe Leszek told the town council Monday. “If it’s windy, it’s really dry, don’t burn. Use common sense. Keep your fires maintained. So hopefully, that’ll cut down on some of our brush fires this year.”

Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston discussed some of the planned activities with the city council Tuesday. “The fire department will start having classes with Little Lambs and Head Start on Wednesday and at the elementary school with the children on Thursday,” he said. “And I think it’s important to teach our kids, ‘Don’t play with fire.'”

According to State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson, alternative heating sources are one of the leading causes of home fires and account for 19 percent of home fire deaths in the U.S. Marshal Greeson advises Hoosiers to take particular precautions if alternative heating equipment is utilized in order to ensure safety this season.
He advises residents to never leave space heaters on in unoccupied rooms and to only have one heater plugged in to each electrical outlet. Be to keep heaters away from loose or flammable objects such as clothing, curtains, bedding and furniture. Continue reading
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Fire Prevention Week is the longest running public health observance on record.
First established in 1925 by President Calvin Coolidge, it was formed in order to commemorate the “Great Chicago Fire” of October of 1871 when more than 250 people died and another 100,000 were left homeless. This year, Fire Prevention Week started on the 8th and runs through the 14th. It serves as a reminder to individuals of all ages to be prepared for when the unexpected may strike.
During this week, parents and teachers are encouraged to go over basic fire prevention and safety tips with students at all levels. The NFPA has a few helpful resources that can help families be prepared in case of a fire. Continue reading
