WKVI Food Drive a Success, Hundreds of Pounds Raised
Joan Haugh at Community Services of Starke County said she was pleased with the result of the food drive at Five Star. Donors put forth more than $270 to go toward the food pantry, and Five Star also made a $500 donation. A total of 166 pounds of food were raised at Five Star for the food pantry, and Haugh said it will go a long way.

WKVI Food Drive Coming Up; Live Broadcasts from Five Star, Sander’s
After raising more than 375 pounds of food for the food pantry last year, it’s time again for the WKVI Five Star Food Drive and this year features a new addition to the event as WKVI General Manager Jerry Curtis will be broadcasting live and accepting donations at Sander’s Foods in Winamac. This is fourth consecutive year for the food drive event, and Curtis said he has been involved in three of them, doing live remote broadcasts from the store.
Curtis said the food drive event is something WKVI is proud to do to help their community.
Five Star Sells Out of Twinkies
Twinkies lasted less than 24 hours on the shelves at Five Star in the Knox Mall. The Hostess treats are sold out, but more will be in stock next week. The gooey goodies made their return after a hiatus prompted by last year’s Hostess Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. Metropoulos & Co. and Apollo Global Management purchased the bakery in March for $410 million. CEO C. Dean Metropoulos stated at that time that the company would make $60 million in capital investments to reopen locations throughout this summer, with plans to hire at least 1500 employees to get the snacks back on the shelves.
Hostess Snacks Return to Starke County
Twinkies have made their long-awaited return to Starke County to minimal fanfare, but while the snack cakes aren’t exactly flying off the shelves, some residents were excited to see their favorite Hostess treats back on sale. Five Star in Knox began selling Hostess products this morning, with a display set up and ready before 11 a.m.
One Knox resident said he was elated to see the products back on the shelves, though they didn’t have the snack his wife was looking for.
Five Star to Donate Portion of Sales to Employee Dealing with Cancer
On Saturday, March 9, many employees at the Knox Five Star will be wearing pink or grey shirts with purple ribbons in honor of their coworker, Wanda Gross, who has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Gross has been a cashier at Five Star for several years, and the employees are banding together in an effort to show their support for the family.
Also on Saturday, Five Star has announced that they will be donating two percent of the day’s sales to the Gross family. So, if your pantry is looking a bit scarce, save your shopping for Saturday, March 9, and a portion of your purchase – at no additional cost – will go toward the Gross family to help cover the often-overwhelming costs of cancer treatment.
WKVI/Five Star Food Drive a Success!
The WKVI/Five Star food drive for the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry was held Saturday at Five Star and it was a success. The boy and girl scouts in North Judson also helped get donations for the food drive.
Several carts were loaded with food items and several cash donations were made. Community Services of Starke County Director Joan Haugh said it greatly helps the food pantry. Continue reading
WKVI/Five Star Food Drive Today
Today is the day to help your neighbors in need.
Members of the WKVI staff will be ready to take your non-perishable food donation for the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry today at Five Star in Knox from 9 a.m. to Noon. When you get to the store to pick up your groceries, put a few other items in the cart for the pantry and that donation will go to help the over 290 families that utilize the food pantry each month.
Five Star/WKVI Food Drive Next Weekend
This Saturday, WKVI and Five Star are teaming up for another community event to help others in need. On Nov. 17, we will be broadcasting live from Five Star and taking donations to help stock the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry in our Third Annual Food Drive.
Joan Haugh, Community Services of Starke County executive director, is looking forward to the event.
Car Catches Fire in Five Star Parking Lot
The Knox-Center Township Fire Department was called to a vehicle fire last night in the Five Star parking lot.
Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost, said that when they arrived at the scene, flames were coming from the engine compartment. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the engine area. No foul play is suspected.

36 years ago today, the Knox Mall officially opened. Ribordy Drugs entered the new building first. Five Star, which was located across the street where Smith Farm Store is now, moved in a couple of days later.

Five Star Celebrates 47 Years Today!
Happy Birthday to a Knox business that WKVI has had a long relationship with. Five Star in Knox opened on this date 47 years ago today.
The first manager, and part owner, was Ben Lipke.
At one time, Five Star had seven stores, and Ben remembered opening the store here.
Knox City Police Continue to Investigate Five Star Burglary
The Knox City Police Department continues to investigate the burglary at Five Star.
Police say they are looking for two male suspects who are approximately six feet tall. The vehicle used by the suspects is said to be a gold, late 1990s model Chevy Caprice with dark tinted windows. Detectives say that they have been receiving tips from the security footage that was posted on this website and are following up on the information given to them. Evidence was collected at the scene and is being analyzed by the Indiana State Police Crime Lab.
Reward Offered for the Arrest of Five Star Burglars
A reward of $1,000 is being offered by the owner of Five Star in Knox for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of persons who broke into the store early Monday morning. The burglary took place sometime after 1:00 a.m.
The burglars used an acetylene torch to try to cut into an ATM machine, but no money was stolen. The police told WKVI news that the suspects broke into the store by prying open the back door.
Knox City Police Investigates Burglary at Five Star
The investigation into the burglary at Five Star continues and is being handled by the Knox City Police Department where they will be reviewing security cameras that caught three suspects in the store. The burglary occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. Monday morning.
Police told WKVI that the suspects broke into the store by prying open the back door. The suspects did minimal damage in the store and they attempted to get money from an ATM, but no money was stolen. A complete inventory has not been done to see if anything was taken. Police are are looking for the vehicle used in the incident, a late 1990s model Chevy Malibu.
