Efforts to recognize Starke County’s “Space Tree” have gotten the approval of the county commissioners. The seed orbited the Earth on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1988 and was planted on the northwest corner of the courthouse square in 1990. But Kathy Norem with Knox Main Street United told the commissioners Monday that there was never a marker until now.

A living piece of space exploration history will be celebrated with a fun run in Downtown Knox. On the northwest corner of the Starke County Courthouse Square is a sycamore tree, grown from a seed that orbited the Earth on the Space Shuttle Atlantis in 1988. Seedlings were given to each Indiana county, and Starke County’s was planted on the courthouse lawn in April of 1990.

The Knox High School Life Skills Class is hosting their 2nd annual Color Run this Saturday and there’s still time to sign-up!
The Color Run is an untimed 3-mile fun run for all ages and fitness abilities. Along the route, runners pass through vibrant “color zones” where powered-dye if playfully thrown at the participants. The course will end with a “finish fest” that will feature a DJ, door prizes and a cook-out hosted by the National Guard.
Event organizer Tiffany Hoar, said they’re already expecting two times more participants than last year! As the teacher for the Life Skills class at Knox High school, she works with students who have mild and moderate cognitive disabilities. Continue reading
Still Time to Register for 9/11 Heroes Run in Culver
The Town of Culver will be honoring the memory of victims of the World Trade Center attacks, fallen heroes and their families with a 9/11 Heroes 5K Run and 1 mile fun run/walk on Saturday, September 16. In the meanwhile, event coordinators and volunteers have been lining the course with American flags.
Walkers and runners of all different ages and abilities are asked to come out to the Culver Academy Naval Building this Saturday to show support for veterans, their families and first responders. There is still time to register online before the race but individuals also have the ability to register on-site for an additional cost. Continue reading
Tour de La Porte Starts Today!
More than one-thousand people from various cities and states will gather this weekend for fun and fundraising at the 16th annual Tour de La Porte walking, running and cycling event sponsored by the Healthcare Foundation of La Porte. 100 percent of proceeds from the event go to benefit local cancer patients directly. The money can assist with things like treatment, medication and wigs as well as in town and out of town transportation costs and even child care. Continue reading
