Plymouth Long-Term Care Facility Up to 19 COVID Deaths, According to New State Dashboard

Miller’s Merry Manor of Plymouth has now had 19 of its residents die after testing positive for COVID-19. The facility has had a total of 61 resident COVID-19 cases, according to the latest numbers from the Indiana State Department of Health. Forty-one of those were from tests taken on July 3. Thirty-seven staff members at the facility have also tested positive.

Plymouth Long-Term Care Facility Reports Nine COVID-19 Deaths, 50 Residents Infected

Indiana has released a preliminary list of COVID-19 cases at each long-term care facility. Locally, Miller’s Merry Manor of Plymouth reported nine resident deaths, 50 residents infected, and 29 staff members infected. The data released by the Indiana State Department of Health Wednesday includes cases from the start of the pandemic up until July 14.

Starke County Youth Club Receives Gift from Golden Living Center

Golden Living Check PresentationThe Starke County Youth Club can continue its efforts to provide quality after school programs to local students thanks to a local business. The nonprofit recently received a $1,000 award from the Golden Living Center Community Support Initiative. SCYC Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says the organization has been delighted to perform service learning projects in partnership with Golden Living Center. Enjoy the Sounds of the Season at Knox Music Programs

 
 

Annual Christmas music programs are scheduled at the Knox Elementary School starting with 3rd grade students today. The 2nd grade, tomorrow;  1st grade, Wednesday, Dec. 10th; and kindergarten students, Thursday, Dec. 11th. All programs begin at 6 p.m. in the Knox Elementary School gymnasium. A “Book Fair” for students and parents follows each concert.

The Middle and High School Holiday Band Concert begins at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Dec. 10th in the Weinberg Gymnasium.

Ed Hasnerl Salutes Long-Time Listener

  
 

A long-time resident of the Golden Living Center in Knox was joined by many of his friends at a “going-away” party yesterday.

The throaty voice that reverberates across the gathering area of the Golden Living Center each time I walk in the front door, won’t be greeting me there after Monday.

61-year-old Tim Crum, who, every day, stakes out the southwest corner of that room for his own, is moving to Branson, Missouri.  Tim has made this care facility his home for the past 37 years. He’s moving closer family members.

Golden Living Center in Knox Receives Coveted 10 Karat Award

For the second year in a row, Golden Living Center in Knox received a perfect score in their annual survey. According to Golden Living Center’s Glenn Wilson, they received a zero-deficiency score in the survey, something only eight percent of centers in the state earn. He says to earn it twice in a row is an even greater honor, and the organization is excited to receive it.

Golden Living’s coveted 10 Karat award was also presented to Golden Living Center. The award is one of the company’s highest honors for superior performance in delivering quality care and services to its residents, and only a few Living Centers of the 304 nursing homes are selected to receive the award each year.

Wilson says the award takes into account a number of responsibilities for the center.

Free CNA Class Offered In Valparaiso July 18

A free CNA class will be available at the Valparaiso Golden Living Center facility on July 18.

Thirty applications are available for this course beginning Monday, July 9 at the Valparaiso Golden Living Center facility at 9 a.m. CT. A test will be given on Thursday, July 12 at 9 a.m. for applicants. The test will consist of basic English comprehension and math, and for those who pass the test on the first attempt, an interview will be set up and they could be placed in a class.

The class will be run from July 18 to Sept. 12, and the best part of this CNA class? It’s free! However, participants will need to purchase a white uniform, white shoes, a watch with a seconds hand and a binder for papers. For more information, call instructor Kay Brown at (219) 462-6158.

Taylor Davis Named Employee of the Year

Taylor Davis, Charge Nurse at Golden Living Center – Knox, has been selected as Employee of the Year.

Taylor Davis has been part of the Golden Living Center team since September 2009, and is responsible for supervising resident’s nursing care. Davis was selected as Employee of the Year based on her contribution to providing excellent care in a compassionate and comfortable environment. Additionally, she was one of the team members who helped the facility achieve a deficiency-free survey in 2011.

Former WKVI On-Air Personality Tom Belcher Passes Away

We received word that former WKVI morning on-air personality, Tom Belcher, passed away early Tuesday morning. His health had been failing in recent months and was just transferred to Golden Living Center in Knox this week and he passed away at IU Health Starke Hospital.

Tom graduated from Knox High School in 1987 and began as the morning DJ at WKVI in the mid-1990s. He had a great talent for music, singing, dancing and entertaining the residents in the Kankakee Valley. He was 42 years old.

Funeral services are pending with the Braman and Son Memorial Chapel in Knox.

Many Activities are Scheduled Saturday and Sunday in the Kankakee Valley!

Even though Christmas Eve is a few days off, many children in our area will get some gifts early. The Starke County Abate organization will be handing out toys, clothing and food items to 90 families at the Bass Lake Golf Course on Saturday. “It will be at the Bass Lake Golf Course,” said Abate President, Terry Young. “We have 90 families that will be coming out this year. They were all sent out invitations to come. There are 240 kids and all the families will have a turkey and all kinds of gifts. Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus will also be there.” When it comes to a big heart for children, the 290 members of Abate are in the forefront.
