A special piece from the Starke County Historical Society is on loan to a local library. Fred and Judy Parker of Boca Raton, Fla., formerly of Starke County, donated a 1920s antique carousel horse to the museum a few years ago. Until recently it’s been on display at the Starke County Museum. Space there is limited, so the historical society board wanted to find a special spot to display the piece for public enjoyment. Come celebrate the recent renovations at the Henry F. Shricker Public Library in Knox during their annual summer reading program kick off today at 5:30 p.m. The theme for this year’s children and young adult program is Fizz…Boom…Read. It is a science oriented theme but that doesn’t mean that the reading choices are limited to science books. Students will be required to fill out a reading log and will then be eligible for prizes. The program runs from June 2 until July 26. Although the kickoff aimed towards kids there is a summer reading program for adults in which they will need to read six books checked out from the library. Entertainment for the little ones will include the presence of story book characters such as Clifford the Big Red Dog and Llama Llama Red Pajama. The Henry F. Shricker Public Library in Knox is offering programs for everyone this weekend. Elwood Staffing is sponsoring a job fair tomorrow from 10 a.m until 2 p.m. This program is open to all local adults and will take place in the meeting room of the library.
On Saturday, local man Jack O’Malley will be hosting a program and planting flowers that attract monarch butterflies. This opportunity is aimed at young adults but open to everyone. This special gardening event happening at 10 a.m Saturday, but it will run all weekend. This is the first of several summer programs in the butterfly garden at the library. If you’ve been looking for a creative outlet for your child who loves to build, look no further. The Henry F. Shricker Public Library in Knox offers a club the final Tuesday of every month that fits that description. It gives students the chance to show off their amateur architecture skills with Legos. Kids have the opportunity to build and name their own creation. This organization gives local children a chance to work with their hands and develop original work that will be featured in the library throughout the month. The next meeting will take place Tuesday, May 27 from 5:30 until 6:30 p.m.
A meeting is scheduled for Saturday, April 19 to see what the interest is in creating a dog recreation park in Knox.
Those spearheading the idea ask that all dog owners/lovers attend the 10 a.m. meeting at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox to learn about information needed to get a dog park approved in the city limits.
Chuck Richardson previously told WKVI that he presented a list of names on a petition to start a dog park at the Knox Park Board meeting last month, but the board members reportedly told him that they would like to see people attend their next meeting who are in favor of the incident.

Library Director Sheila Urwiler said they are moving some shelving and installing some new furniture. Every attempt is being made to tie up loose ends in the project.

Urwiler said the grand opening ceremony will include a ribbon cutting at noon and activities for kids, as well as entertainment by the Knox Jazz Band and the Showstoppers.
Urwiler said she’s glad the opening day is nearly here.

Library Director Sheila Urwiler told WKVI that the children’s department has been moved to the newly constructed wing and the young adult department has been relocated from upstairs to its new area. On top of that, all the books have been put away, some bulletin boards have been put up, and some old furniture that won’t be reused has been disposed of.

Henry F. Schricker LibraryThe construction of an addition at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox is still moving along right on schedule, according to Director Sheila Urwiler. She told WKVI that the construction workers have finished putting a roof over the new young adult area, and they are now beginning work on installing windows.
The new wing is looking more and more complete each day, and Urwiler said they’re still on track for completion toward the end of August or early September. The crew will soon finish putting in the windows and then the masonry work will take priority as they improve the exterior of the addition, matching the look of the existing library. Workers will also be working on the electrical infrastructure next week as well.
The construction project at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox continues as the new addition begins to take shape. Library Director Sheila Urwiler said the construction crews are currently working on the wall framing and sheeting, roof framing, and structural steel aspects of the work and they will soon begin the roof trusses and exterior wall sheeting.

The Henry F. Schricker Public Library sponsored a cupcake contest at the library last week. The theme was “How does the community relate to the library?” Nine people submitted their creations to a panel of judges who taste-tested all of the submissions.
The judges were from WKVI Radio, Mexico Lindo, County Kettle and Christo’s Restaurant. A variety of different flavors and textures pleased the judges as they chomped and sampled. Continue reading →

NIPSCO just gave Knox the all-clear regarding the gas main break. Knox Elementary School students are returning to their classrooms and will be dismissed at the normal time from Knox Elementary this afternoon. They were evacuated to the middle and high schools after a construction crew at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library hit a gas line. The library remains closed, and the Starke County Youth Club will not be meeting there this afternoon.
Knox Elementary School has been evacuated after a construction crew at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library struck a gas main. Knox Superintendent A.J. Gappa says students at the elementary school have been moved to other facilities. Students in grades kindergarten, 1 and 2 are at the high school, while students in grades 3, 4 and 5 are at the middle school. Gappa stresses the school was evacuated as a precautionary measure and says he will advise parents as to student pickup arrangements by the end of the day. The Starke County Public Library Henry F. Schricker branch is also closed as a result of the gas main break.
It was all about chocolate yesterday at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox. Savannah Gohr, of Dove Chocolatiers, presented the program where she explained the history of chocolate.
“It actually started with the Mayans,” Gohr explained. “They were the ones that harvested and roasted the cacao seeds. They ground the seeds into a paste and mixed it with water to create the first chocolate drink and it sort of went from there.”
