As a part of Severe Weather Preparedness Week, which runs from March 18th through the 24th, Indiana broadcast stations will participate in a statewide tornado drill on Tuesday, March 20th.
The National Weather Service test of the statewide Emergency Alert System will be issued for 15 minutes at 9:15 a.m. CT/10:15 a.m. ET tomorrow morning. Continue reading
WKVI’s collaborative effort with the Starke County Prosecutor’s Office to share a serious message recently received statewide recognition. The station was honored with its third Indiana Broadcasters Association Spectrum Award in as many years, this time in the Local Community Involvement category. The winning entry, entitled Sexting Campaign, drew some snickers from the audience when it was announced, but they quickly realized it’s no laughing matter when they heard the student-produced public service announcements. WKVI-FM is the Indiana Broadcasters Association Market 3 Station of the Year. General Manager Jerry Curtis says the judges look closely at the service stations provide to the community.
“We have a full-time, full-service news department. They look at that. They look at other community events that we’re involved in, like the Pizza Hut World Hunger night that we did. Also the radiothon for the Starke County Youth Club. Those are all factors that they consider heavily,” Curtis said. Continue reading
“Every year the association recruits entries, audio projects from stations in cities, towns and markets across the state. This year we’re fortunate enough to be a finalist in the Station of the Year category, and also we’ve been recognized as a finalist in the public affairs program for our Sunday program, Kankakee Valley Viewpoints. It’s on Sunday at noon. We won’t find out until the dinner Saturday night, but we’re looking forward to being there and celebrating in whatever fashion,” Curtis said.
Many scholarships were given out to seniors from the Starke County Community Foundation and other worthy organizations in the community and several colleges. Congratulations to WKVI intern, Makayla Dillard, who received the Cheryl Lyn Welter Memorial Scholarship and one of six Indiana Broadcasters Association Scholarships.
Knox Community High School senior and WKVI programming intern Makayla Dillard is one of six Indiana Broadcasters Association Scholarship winners chosen from around the state from a field of 140 applicants. She plans to major in telecommunications at Ball State University.
“I want to be an on-air personality. My ultimate goal would be to be like Ellen DeGeneres and have a talk show, or maybe like Howard Stern, but not as vulgar,” she says.
