With the recent announcement from IU Health that the healthcare provider will soon be cutting 800 jobs at several facilities throughout the state, many people are left wondering how that will affect the Kankakee Valley at a local level. Fortunately, there are no layoffs anticipated for IU Health LaPorte or IU Health Starke hospitals, but the director of marketing at IU Health Starke Hospital, Neil Mangus, told WKVI that these local hospitals are suffering from fewer patients and declining payment rates as well.
IU Health Starke Hospital Names New Interim President
A familiar face is once again at the helm of IU Health Starke Hospital. Linda Satkoski has been named interim president at the Knox facility following Jared Beasley’s recent resignation from that post. Satkoski served as the hospital’s president from July of 2009 until May of 2012.
During her previous tenure at IU Health Starke Hospital, more than 80 new physicians were added to the Medical Staff—providing Kankakee Valley with specialized care in cardiology, women’s care, orthopedics and sports medicine, close to home. Under Satkoski’s leadership, millions of dollars were invested into new technology to assure the highest level of care to the community.
In addition to her interim role in Knox, Satkoski will continue her duties as Chief Operating Officer at the partner-facility IU Health La Porte Hospital, where she’s served for the past year. Continue reading
County Officials Unhappy with IU Health’s Hospital Plan
IU Health Starke Hospital would be such in name only if the health care corporation moves forward with plans to replace the existing facility. Management recommends building a single-story structure with four medical/surgical beds, that is slightly more than half the size of the current hospital. The 36,000 square-foot-facility would be behind the existing building for a cost of $11.8 million and would open in 2016. County Commissioner Jennifer Davis shared an overview of the plan during a special joint meeting between the council and commissioners and called the proposed facility “disappointing and almost insulting.”
IU Health Starke Hospital Facility Replacement Proposal to Be Unveiled
Starke County officials will get their first look at the replacement proposal for IU Health Starke Hospital during a special called meeting this afternoon. The council and commissioners are meeting jointly for that purpose at 1 p.m. in the meeting room at the county annex building. That meeting is open to the public.
Walking Challenge Starting Off on the Right Foot
The Moving Starke County Forward Walking Challenge is going quite well.
It is the challenge of those involved to collectively walk the distance from the Statue of Liberty to the Golden Gate Bridge and so far 885 miles have been logged. The bar may be raised a little as the results have shown that a 3,000 mile trip will be easily attained.
IU Health Starke Hospital Participates in Day of Community Service
It was a Day of Community Service for employees from IU Health Starke Hospital Friday at Wythogan Park in Knox.
Approximately 50 volunteers from the hospital took four hours to install exercise equipment at the park as a way to help residents get moving and improve wellness.
IU Health’s Day of Community Service Set for Friday
Staff members from IU Health Starke Hospital and employees and volunteers from the city of Knox will be joining together to participate in the hospital’s Day of Community Service.
The volunteers will be meeting in Wythogan Park at Pavilion #2 at noon on Friday to pick up brush and to paint railing in the park.

IU Health Starke Hospital Employees to Participate in Day of Community Service
Volunteers are needed to help the staff of IU Health Starke Hospital and the city of Knox in the 2013 Day of Community Service.
Volunteers will be at Wythogan Park in Knox on Friday, May 17 to expand and enhance trails and green spaces. Those participating will be meeting at Pavilion #2 and will assist in the project from noon to 4 p.m. CT.
Drug Symposium Scheduled Today in Knox
Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller will be the keynote speaker during the drug symposium today at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox beginning at 9 a.m.
IU Health Starke Hospital has partnered with the Moving Starke County Forward Coalition to present this drug symposium to address the abuse of methamphetamine and prescription drugs in Starke County. Zoeller is taking a more aggressive role in the issue and assisting in finding solutions.
Zoeller will be giving a presentation and will answer questions. A local panel of presenters will also share information. Small group discussions will be held in order to gather ideas for innovative ways to curb the drug issues in the county.
Healthy Food Alternatives Offered at Health Fair Friday
The health fair held Friday afternoon at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox offered not just a variety of health screenings but a cornucopia of healthy food options as well. Laura Boyd, culinary coordinator for IU Health Starke Hospital, explained that the hospital provided health alternatives to everyday food, including vegetarian sloppy joes made with vegetarian crumble, Sweet Baby Ray’s barbecue sauce, and sautéed onions. Boyd said the sloppy joes contain about half the fat as a typical burger and said they are not only completely healthy but delicious too.

In partnership with the Moving Starke County Forward Coalition, IU Health Starke Hospital is looking to address a community crisis through a Drug Abuse Symposium in downtown Knox. The problem of illegal drug abuse, including that of methamphetamine and prescription drugs, is a problem that affects numerous communities throughout Indiana and the nation, and these organizations are looking to make a difference.
Minimal Injuries in Three Vehicle Accident North of Knox
Starke County Sheriff’s Deputies and emergency personnel were called to a three vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon.
The driver of a vehicle was traveling north of Knox and attempted to turning left into a driveway on U.S. 35 just south of State Road 8 west. The car behind that vehicle slowed and waited for the vehicle to turn when a third vehicle and rear-ended the second vehicle. The second vehicle then hit the vehicle turning left.
IU Health Starke Hospital, Community Services Partner for Heath Fair
IU Health Starke Hospital and Community Services of Starke County are teaming up to host a health fair Friday afternoon at the Knox Community Center at 55 E. Lake St. Members of the hospital staff will offer several free screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar, osteoporosis, oral cancer and take-home screening kits to check for colorectal cancer. Attendees will also get a free gift, and refreshments will be available. The Community Health Fair will take place Friday from 2 until 7 p.m. CDT. Knox Woman Dies from Injuries Sustained in Incident
A Knox woman who reportedly jumped out of a moving car has died.
23-year-old Alicia Husband of Knox was a passenger in a vehicle when witnesses say she jumped from the vehicle as it approached the intersection of State Road 8 and 600 East yesterday afternoon. She was traveling with her husband, Donald Husband, 31, of Knox.
She was taken to IU Health Starke Hospital and airlifted to Memorial Hospital in South Bend. She was pronounced dead today shortly after noon.
Walking Challenge Extended to Starke County Residents
It’s National Walking Day today! In light of today’s observance, Julie Butus, health and human sciences educator at Purdue Extension in Starke County, is asking you to take part a walking challenge.

Doctor’s Day Celebrated at IU Health Starke Hospital
While the official National Doctor’s Day isn’t until Saturday, March 30, it was celebrated Wednesday morning at Indiana University Health Starke Hospital.
The National Doctor’s Day was first celebrated in 1991, and it is a day set aside to recognize the work of doctors.
Wednesday’s celebration at IU Health Starke Hospital was an opportunity for colleagues and friends to say “thank you” for the services provided to area residents.
IU Health Starke Hospital Names Interim President
IU Health Starke Hospital has named a new interim president. Jared Beasley will take over next month for standing President David Hyatt, who is transferring to a new position at Jay County Hospital in Portland, Ind. Beasley has served as vice president of clinical and diagnostic services at IU Health LaPorte Hospital since last June. He previously worked as the emergency department director at partner IU Health Goshen Hospital for six years. Beasley earned a bachelor of science in nursing from Goshen College, a bachelor of science in economics and business administration from Manchester College and a master in business administration from Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne. Monterey Woman Injured in Accident
A Monterey woman was injured in a single vehicle accident Wednesday night.
Starke County Sheriff’s Department emergency personnel found that the driver, whose name was not released, was driving westbound on County Road 625 South, southeast of Bass Lake. When she approached 700 East, she applied her brakes but was not able to stop. She slid through the intersection and hit a utility pole.
Head Start students treated and released following crash
The 15 Marshall-Starke Head Start students whose bus got hit by a truck this morning on the way to school have been released to their
parents. They were all taken to IU Health Starke Hospital to be checked out after bus 37 was hit by a truck as it was crossing Heaton Street at Lake Street by One Stop just before 8 a.m. Continue reading
