A Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office K-9 is being credited with saving a life. During Tuesday’s county commissioners meeting, Sheriff Jeff Richwine discussed a recent incident involving Deputy Seth Barton and K-9 Loki. “One of our people that was wanted was in a house up in Starke County,” he said. “They get there, this person’s actually stabbing himself. When they get there, Barton and Loki and a deputy from Starke County went into the house, and the guy made it clear that we wanted to kill himself and was still stabbing himself with a knife.”
Progress Made in North Judson PD K-9 Fundraiser, Additional Donations Still Needed
The North Judson Police Department is already nearing their $20,000 goal for the purchase of a K-9 and subsequent training thanks to a decision made by town council members Monday evening.
Town Marshal Kelly Fisher requested for $15,000 to be encumbered from the general police insurance fund into the K-9 fund to help cover the cost of purchasing a K-9 from the Peru-based company Vohne Liche Kennels. The council members unanimously approved Fisher’s request.
Fisher also acknowledged some local businesses and organizations that are already offering assistance to the NJPD. San Pierre Veterinary Clinic offered to donate annual shots and physicals and Feed Barn is donating all food needed for the K-9. Continue reading

The new patrol vehicle for the Knox Police Department’s K-9 officer has been delivered. Police Chief Harold Smith told the Board of Works yesterday the kennel has been installed in the Chevrolet Tahoe. Knox Council Shifts Funds for K-9 Vehicle
The Knox City Police Department has funds lined up to buy a patrol vehicle for their K-9 officer. Mayor Dennis Estok says the Chevrolet Tahoe to accommodate the dog and equipment carries a price tag of about $40,000. Last week the Knox Redevelopment Commission pledged $20,000 from the Tax Increment Financing account toward the purchase. Sheriff Jeff Richwine filled the Pulaski County Council in on an incident involving one of their deputies and the Starke County K-9 unit. The incident occurred on August 1st when officers were pursuing an assailant on a four-wheeler.

Police Force Addition Gives North Judson Some Teeth
The North Judson Police Department is adding another officer, only this one works on four legs.
It was announced Friday that a K-9 unit will be joining the North Judson Police force. This is the first K-9 that will work for the department. The 6-year-old Dutch Shepherd name Gunner has completed years of training with a certified American K-9 Association outlet.
