Kids Closet Receives a Plethora of Supplies for Upcoming Back-to-School Event
Kids Closet Ministry annually provides school supplies to underprivileged children in Starke County with their Pack-a-Backpack event. Community members get the chance to contribute during their school supply drives. This year while Kids Closet was posted outside the Dollar General stores in North Judson and Knox they received an ample amount of supplies from weekend shoppers. Donation Account Established for Knox Fire Victims
Sunday’s house fire in downtown Knox left two single mothers and seven children homeless. The blaze at 7 N. Bower Street started in a second floor bedroom, according to Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost, who believes an electrical heater is to blame. Nobody was injured, but the families were able to salvage very little. The Kid’s Closet Ministry at North Judson United Methodist Church has stepped in to offer assistance, and the St. Joseph County American Red Cross chapter is providing temporary shelter. An account has also been set up at First Farmer’s Bank and Trust in Knox and North Judson if anyone would like to make a monetary gift to the Sexton Family Fire Fund.
Kid’s Closet Ministry Awarded $2000 Grant for Coats
A local organization is looking to keep kids warm this winter, and to help in that endeavor, the Northern Indiana Community Foundation awarded Kid’s Closet Ministry $2000 to be used to purchase coats for children. Linda Lewandowski with Kid’s Closet Ministry explained the grant will allow them to purchase up to 100 coats to be distributed to kids throughout Starke County.
Kid’s Closet Ministry Pack-a-Backpack Event This Week
With the supply drives behind them, Kid’s Closet Ministry’s Pack-a-Backpack event is coming up this week. On Aug. 7 and 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. CT at the North Judson Methodist Church, Linda Lewandowski said the ministry will be giving away school supplies to children in need.
“We’re looking for children in need. So, basically, if your children are on free or reduced lunch, then they should qualify for a free backpack and school supplies. You just need to show up on Aug. 7 or 8, Wednesday and Thursday, 5 to 7 p.m. at the Fellowship Hall at the North Judson United Methodist Church and we will have paperwork for you to fill out – a registration form for the children. The children have to be present with the parent or guardian,” Lewandowski explained.

The Kid’s Closet Ministry’s Pack-a-Backpack event is approaching, planned for Aug. 7 and 8 from 5 to 7 p.m. CT at the North Judson United Methodist Church. According to Linda Lewandowski, director of the ministry, they are holding drives to collect school supplies to be given to children in need.
“Kids Closet Ministry is all about kids in need in Starke County. It’s a new ministry that began in the spring that just came from an idea, and so we’re kind of working on it and seeing what we can do,” said Lewandowski.
Kid’s Closet Ministry Aims to Provide Assistance to Starke County Children
A ministry serving children in Starke County is looking for donations of clothes to help in their mission of providing children with clothes, school supplies, shoes and personal hygiene items. Linda Lewandowski, director of Kid’s Closet Ministry, said they are currently holding collections at a number of sites in local communities.
“We’re running collections for gently used and new children’s and used clothes, and we have drop-off sites at the North Judson United Methodist Church, Route 10 Bar and Grill, Max Effex Fitness are accepting them for us,” said Lewandowski.
