Knox fire crews were called to a fire at the St. Thomas Acquinas school

The Knox-Center Township Fire Department responded to a call at the St. Thomas Acquinas School Tuesday morning.

“One the ballasts in the fluorescent lights went bad in one of the classrooms,” explained Fire Chief, Kenny Pfost.

The school houses the Head Start program and the students were removed.

House Fire at Bass Lake Destroys One Home; Damages Another

The Bass Lake Fire Department responded to a house fire on County Road 210 on Saturday night at about 10:10 p.m.

According to Bass Lake Fire Chief Les Jensen, a summer home, located south of Maple Drive, that was owned by Patrick Botica from Illinois was completely destroyed. A neighboring home owned by James Tolone also of Illinois was moderately damaged due to the fire. While no foul play is suspected, the incident remains under investigation.

Knox City Council Discusses Contract with Fire Department

The City of Knox does not have a Fire Department. That was explained to the Knox City Council this week by City Attorney, David Matsey. The discussion was held after Mayor Rick Chambers read a letter asking the City to sign a contract to provide fire coverage in Jackson Township.

Matsey explained that the Knox-Center Township Volunteer Fire Department is incorporated. It is funded by the city of Knox ($115,000 yearly) and Center Township ($30,000 annually) but is an entity of its own.

Knox City Council Approves Knox Industrial Park Name Change

At the recent meeting of the Knox City Council, Starke County Development Foundation Director, Charles Weaver, requested that the Council change the name of the Knox Industrial Park to the Starke County Rail Park. The Council unanimously approved the name change and the proposal will be taken to the Starke County Commissioners for approval. The name was changed to give it a county feel rather than a city feel.
