Dog Recreation Park Proposed in the City of Knox

dog picA meeting to gather interest in a dog recreation park in Knox will be held April 19 at 6 p.m. at the Henry F. Schricker Public Library in Knox.

Chuck Richardson told WKVI that he presented a list of names on a petition to start a dog park at the Knox Park Board meeting last week, but the board members reportedly told him that they would like to see people at their next meeting in favor of the incident.

Richardson proposed that the fenced-in dog park be located in Wythogan Park in Knox. If that location isn’t feasible, then another location could be sought.

Knox Park Board Gives OK for $5 Fee

The Knox Park Board has given the go-ahead for park officials to begin charging $5 per child to use the park’s fields for scheduled games or practices, once per season. The Knox City Council had previously discussed options to increase revenue for the park department, and Ray Stephenson with the park board told the council that they are considering charging a fee for children to use the fields for practices or games, and said a $5 charge per child would go a long way in funding some of the park’s maintenance.

Knox Park Board Discusses Concession Use Fee

Continuing in their effort to generate more revenue for parks in the city of Knox, the park board this week discussed further the possibility of a “concession use fee,” which would be charged to those who wish to rent the concession area and its attached storage. Currently, the park charges a 15 percent commission fee based on the user’s gross income, and while that had been doing well for some time offsetting the increased electrical cost associated with baseball leagues in the park, the income from that fee has been dropping.

Updated: Two Knox Park Board Members not Eligible to Serve on Board

WKVI News is revisiting a story we had earlier in the week about the eligibility of two Park Board members. Because we used the phrase “not qualified”, some in our audience thought we meant the two members in question were not competent to sit on the Board. That is not correct, as the members Irene Szakonyi and Kurt Snearly are eminently qualified. Park Board President, Chris Marshall, called them very valuable, and we concur.

Two Knox Park Board Members Not Eligible to Serve

Two members of the Knox Park Board are not eligible to serve. According to Knox City Council Attorney, David Matsey, the Ex-Officio members of the Board, Irene Szakonyi and Kurt Snearly, are not members of the Boards that named them to the Park Board.

By definition, an Ex-Officio member of a board is there by virtue of holding another office. The Ex-Officio members of the Park Board were named by the Starke County Library Board and the Knox Community School Board. Since neither are part of those Boards, they are not eligible to serve.
