Knox School Board To Welcome New Members Monday

The new year brings new appointments to various governmental boards.

The Knox School Board will be appointing a new president during their meeting Monday night, as well as a vice president and secretary. Harold Welter held the position of president for the past two years. He was not elected back onto the board so the members will be making a new selection.

Two new members will be welcomed Monday night: Kurt Kemble and Wendy McIntire. They will be sworn into office and several other appointments and memberships will be made. Conflict of Interest Statements will be signed and the 2013 board meeting dates will be approved. Other business that comes before the board will also be discussed.

Knox School Board Project Hearing Sheds Light On Project

The Knox Community School Board held a Project and Preliminary Determination Hearing Monday night prior to the regularly scheduled meeting.

Superintendent A.J. Gappa explained the need for the project construction. He said the Palmer Wing is 60 years old and is deteriorating. The structure needs to provide an adequate educational setting for the students and infrastructure to make that possible.

Knox School Board Authorizes Project Hearing

The Knox Community School Board Monday night gave authorization for a project hearing and a preliminary determination hearing regarding the elementary school project. The hearing will be held on Monday, Dec. 3 during the regular meeting of the board. They will be discussing the possible referendum during that meeting.

As part of that discussion, Superintendent A.J. Gappa said Dr. Mike Trego, an expert in referendums from Indiana Wesleyan University, came back to the school corporation last week to discuss the referendum process with members of the school board and members of the public. The formation of a Political Action Committee (PAC) was done to work toward the success of that referendum.

Knox Swim Coach Resigns Following Alleged Inappropriate Behavior

After previously being suspended with pay, Robert “Ryan” Corbin filed his resignation with the Knox School Board, who approved it at their recent meeting. Corbin, a Knox High School gym teacher and boys and girls varsity swim coach, was suspended after being accused of inappropriate behavior with a 16-year-old student.

Police had previously interviewed both the student and Corbin and they both allegedly admitted to having conversations with each other. Inappropriate Facebook messages were sent, and conversations were also held via telephone and texting.

Knox Community Schools Undergo Bus Inspection

Knox Community School Superintendent A.J. Gappa gave a report to the school board about the recent bus inspection. He says the state police have changed the procedure in inspecting buses.

“In the past, they used to do in the summer and we had weeks to prepare our buses. Now, because the state has cut back on the number of troopers that do the inspections, they have to do them throughout the year,” said Gappa.

Parents Give Input on Aging Palmer Wing at the Knox Elementary School

The Knox Community Elementary School recently held parent/teacher conferences and during that time, parents were asked to go through the Palmer Wing.

“The administrators from the Elementary School invited members and parents in to look at Palmer Wing at the Elementary School just to show some of the needs that might be necessary,” said Superintendent A.J. Gappa. “Our maintenance people do a great job of maintaining things, but that building is nearing 60 years old so some things are going to need to be taken care of. Six or seven parents each night did take advantage and looked at the Palmer Wing and pretty much the comments were unanimous. There is going to have to be something done sometime in the near future.”

Knox Community School Board Moves Ahead with High School Project

The Knox Community School Board approved two agenda items that involve the Qualified School Construction Bond project at the high school. The project includes rehabilitating the roof, lighting, ceiling and HVAC unit in the pool area and water piping throughout the building.

Knox School Board Gets Report on AYP, PL 221

The Knox School Board heard the Adequate Yearly Progress, or AYP, and the Public Law 221 results at its meeting Monday night. Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Peggy Shidaker, and the three building principals, Glenn Barnes, Steve Cronk and Dr. Elizabeth Ratliff, explained the results to the Board.

Food Donations Needed for Kiwanis/Knox Schools Food Drive

The Knox Kiwanis Club and the Knox School Corporation are teaming up to help families in need this holiday season.

The two organizations are collecting food and/or cash donations to help Knox families. The requests for food baskets are greater than the donations. If you have food that you can donate to these organizations, you may drop it off at the Knox High School Office today or Thursday, or call 772-1670. The students and Kiwanis members will be assembling the food baskets on Thursday and delivering them to families on Friday.
