Study Indicates Need for Knox Water, Sewer Rate Increases

City_of_Knox_LogoKnox residents may soon be paying more for monthly water and sewer service. A rate study done by accounting firm Umbaugh and Associates finds more money is needed to keep up with operating expenses, equipment replacement and infrastructure upgrades. Much of the infrastructure dates to the 1960s, according to information presented to the Knox City Council last night. The rate study also finds Knox’s utility bills are among the lowest municipal rates in the area. Continue reading

WKVI Hosts Successful Benefit for Tom Berg

50s 60s night 21The force was strong Saturday night as community members turned out to a benefit for WKVI morning show host (and Star Wars fanatic) Tom Berg. He was recently diagnosed with State 4 cancer. Proceeds from the station’s 1950s-60s night at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center will help him pay his medical expenses. Continue reading

A longtime Starke County Extension Home Economist is the winner of the 2015 Henry F. Schricker Award. Named for the former governor and Starke County native, the award is given annually to a resident who embodies Shricker’s credo of service before self. This year’s committee, comprised of Starke County Chamber of Commerce representatives and former Schricker Award winners, selected Melba Shilling as the honoree. Continue reading

Knox School Board Discusses Insurance Options

Knox-School-Board-2014The annual expense and coverage of the Knox School Corporation’s property and casualty insurance programs were reviewed last night for board members by Mark Aldus for the Educational Service Center Risk Funding Trust (ESCRFT). It’s a cooperative self-insurance program service for some 40 school systems in Indiana. Area schools already in the insurance co-op include  Argos, Plymouth, South Central, Eastern Pulaski, the JESSE Cooperative and several others. At the next board meeting the current carrier will make its presentation for renewal of coverage. Continue reading

Knox Covers Reimbursable Blight Elimination Costs

City_of_Knox_LogoThe Knox City Council approved a loan of money from the city’s share of the county economic development income tax (CEDIT) fund to cover costs of trying to clean up the city. Knox received a Blight Elimination Grant from the state to purchase vacant, dilapidated and condemned homes from willing sellers and is in the process of doing so. Continue reading

Plymouth Man Jailed in Starke County Robbery, Beating

Starke County Sheriff's Department BadgeA Plymouth man faces a pair of felony offenses in Starke County following the recent robbery and beating of an elderly Knox man. An officer from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office was called to the IU Health Starke Hospital emergency room Wednesday, Oct. 7 after Sisco Wireman was brought in after an apparent assault. The people who drove him to the hospital said a fight had taken place at a home in the 100 block of East 500 South. Continue reading

Starke County residents who need a hand up are the big winners in the good-natured bet between WKVI’s Nathan Welter and Mary Perren over the outcome of the recent Knox v. North Judson-San Pierre football game. Since Nathan is a graduate and Knox and they lost, part of his payoff was hosting an hour-long food drive at Heartland Markets in North Judson. Manager Ray Wadja kept a donation can at the register as well for a week afterward. Continue reading

First responders in Starke County will have an easier time locating several homes thanks to the efforts of Kankakee Valley REMC employees. They spent the second annual Indiana’s Electric Cooperative Community Day installing reflective mailbox signs. Continue reading
