Starke County Election Board to Finalize Ballots Today

 
 

Starke County Election Board members will finalize ballots for the November General Election when they meet today. Knox, North Judson and Hamlet will all have municipal elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Also voters who reside in Jackson, Wayne, California, and Railroad Townships will weigh in on the proposed North Judson-San Pierre Schools general fund referendum. Knox Harvest Festival Pageant Entry Deadline Approaching

pageantThere’s still time for Starke County youngsters to enter the Harvest Festival Pageant. The competition will take place Saturday, Sept. 12th at 3 p.m. at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox. The Little Miss and Mister Pageant is open to boys and girls between the ages of 3 and 5, and girls between the ages of 16 and 18 are eligible for the Miss Harvest Festival competition. Knox Plan Commission Recommends Industrial Park Zoning Change

Traffic Control Ssytems IncThe Knox City Planning Commission recommends the rezoning of 16 acres of land in the Knox Industrial Park from residential to light manufacturing to accommodate a proposed business expansion. Planning Commission President Jeff Berg says the existing Traffic Control Specialists, Inc. facility on 300 South/Klockner Drive is bursting at the seams. He says they want to expand into a new building at the corner of Pacific Avenue/50 South and 250 East. Continue reading

Zoning Hearing Set for Industrial Park Property

Traffic Control Ssytems IncThe Knox Planning Commission will conduct a hearing this evening on a zoning request for a parcel of property in the Knox Industrial Park. Traffic Control Specialists wants to build a new facility on 16 acres of land at the corner of 250 East and 50 South/Pacific Avenue. The land is currently zoned residential and must be rezoned to Mechanical/M1 in order to establish an economic revitalization area at the corner. Knox Street Paving to Start Monday

roadworkThe City of Knox will start street paving on Monday. The project list includes Lake Street from Prettyman to McGill Streets, East Street from Water Street to the dead end at the railroad tracks, Myrtle Court and Potter Street from U.S. 35 to Main Street. Residents who live in those areas are asked to move all vehicles from those streets until the work is completed.

 

Sunday Vigil to Mark International Overdose Awareness Day

Moving Starke County Forward is trying to take the stigma out of drug overdoses with a Sunday evening event at Wythogan Park in Knox. Advocates and community members will remember the 61 lives lost in Starke County with a candlelight vigil and share information about the perils and pitfalls of drug use. Jordan Morris from Starke County Community Corrections says people who use drugs are less likely to be aware of the potential consequences of their actions. She  says common rationalizations include “I know my limit” or “I always test what I get first, so I know the strength of it.” She adds mixing different types of drugs can often prove fatal. Chavez Sentencing Scheduled Today

 The Knox man convicted last month of murdering his estranged wife, kidnapping an employee from Mark Bailey’s Discount Center and carjacking an English Lake couple last June will learn his fate today. Gary Chavez is due in Starke Circuit Court for a sentencing hearing this morning. A jury of eight men and four women returned guilty verdicts after about 90 minutes of deliberations. Defense attorney David Welter argued unsuccessfully for a conviction of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Kimberly Chavez of Portage and of auto theft instead of carjacking. Continue reading

City of Knox Receives Insurance Rebate

 
 

The City of Knox is getting a rebate from its health insurance carrier, thanks to a provision in the Affordable Care Act. It caps the amount of premium money companies can spend on advertising, sales, salaries and promotion at 20-percent. The remaining 80 percent has to be spent on actual healthcare benefits.
