Do Your Part, Plus Some Art with the First Ever Community Canvas Fundraiser
The cost of fireworks has sky rocketed! To help account for rising prices, various fireworks fundraisers have been happening leading up to the Starke County Independence Day celebration. According to Mayor Rick Chambers the display costs several thousand dollars. Since the show is provided for the community, members of the community are asked to give a little to help with the cost.
A unique new fundraiser is set to take place tonight from 6 until 8 pm in the Nancy Dembowski Community Center. For only $25 you can participate in Knox’s first ever Community Canvas event. Continue reading
WoodStarke is Back!
Come out to Wythogan Park on August 29 for an event full of music, food and fun for everyone. WoodStarke is scheduled to commence at 10 am and run all day on that Saturday in August. Throughout the day, highlights will include a variety of music, games for the kids and artistic displays as well as activities focusing on local talent and Starke County. Knox Salary Ordinance Includes Smaller Pay Raises
City of Knox employees will get smaller pay raises next year than they are used to. The salary ordinance passed on second reading last night by the city council includes 2-percent raises for full-time employees. Typically their salaries increase by 3-percent annually. Continue reading

EMA Officials Assessing Storm Damage
Volunteer firefighters and Starke County Highway Department employees are clearing roads this morning after strong storms tore through the area late last night. City Court Judge Candidate Leaves Race Following State Law Passage
The Democratic candidate for City Court Judge in Knox has decided to bow out of the race.
HEA 1110 – which was signed into law in May of this year – was particularly influential in the race for City Court Judge in Knox. The law prevents non-attorneys, who are not currently serving, from becoming a City Court Judge. Neither Republican Charles Hasnerl, nor Democrat Angelo Masuka has been described as an attorney.

Knox Council to Consider Salaries, Calendar Dates
The Knox City Council will consider a salary ordinance for the upcoming year on second reading when they meet this evening. The agenda for their 7 p.m. session also includes possible passage of calendar dates for 2016. Those dates were previously given to council members for review in anticipation of action tonight. The Knox City Council will also review a tax abatement for Selected Furniture.
Volunteers Needed for the Starke County Career Success Coalition 4-H Fair Booth
The 4-H fair is scheduled to start soon and the Starke County Career Success Coalition is looking for volunteers willing to help run their booth in the commercial building from 7:30 to 10 pm during fair week, July 13th through the 17th. The objective of the coalition is to provide easier access to higher education to local adults and recent graduates. One specific goal the coalition hopes to reach is that 25% of local students finish college by 2025. Continue reading

Superintendent Gappa Plans to Continue Work in Face of Contract Expiration
Knox Community Schools Superintendent A.J. Gappa says he plans to fulfill what remains of his contract.
Gappa spoke with WKVI News after it was learned he was provided written notice of non-renewal. That means members of the Knox School Board voted not to further extend the contract they have with the Superintendent during their meeting, Monday.
State Law May Affect Elections, Limit City Judge Candidates
A new state law may dictate the outcome of a contested race in Starke County’s general election this November.
House Enrolled Act 1110 is being applied to candidates seeking a position as Judge of a Town Court. Indiana Governor Mike Pence signed the legislation into law in May of this year.

Due Diligence Ongoing in IU Health Starke Affiliation Agreement
IU Health LaPorte and Starke Hospitals continues to work through an affiliation phase with Community Health Systems.
The announcement was made in March of this year, but before any agreements can be finalized, due diligence must first be completed. Work to verify information about the hospital group by Community Health systems has been going on for several months.
