EMA Director Worries About Effect of Rain on Crops

IMG_5011The continued rains have left many area farmers up a creek, so to speak. Starke County Emergency Management Agency Director Ted Bombagetti told the county commissioners last night many have sustained significant losses as a result of standing water. He adds it will be too late for them to replant by the time their fields dry out. Bombagetti has made a formal request for “saturated soil” assistance to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and is waiting for a response.  Continue reading

Knox Board of Works to Discuss Street Paving Bids

Last week they opened bids from three companies for work on Lake, East and Potter Streets and Myrtle Court. The paving bids are the lone item on the agenda for Monday’s 9:30 a.m. meeting at city hall.

Society of Innovators Issues Call for Nominations

society of innovators logoThe Society of Innovators of Northwest Indiana of Ivy Tech Community College is looking for innovators throughout the seven-county region they serve. Officials visited Kemin Industries in North Judson yesterday as part of a seven-county call for nominations tour. The Kemin-Lambert Spearmint Team was the 2013-14 recipient of the Chanute Prize for Team Innovation. Local grower Ed Lambert partnered with Kemin Industries after learning about their aspirations to make a natural food additive during a spearmint growers convention. Continue reading

Don’t Burn It or Bury it, Bring it Down to Starke County’s Environmental Days

scemdIf you’re unsure about how to properly dispose of something, chances are you’ll be able to unload it at the Starke County Environmental Management facility this weekend. The hazardous waste collection event is located at 3835 East 250 North in Knox and runs Friday, June 12 from 3:30 until 5 pm and Saturday, June 13 from 8:30 am until 1 pm. Plea Under Advisement for Attempted Murder Defendant

 Starke Circuit Judge Kim Hall has taken a plea from an attempted murder defendant under advisement. Benton Christopher Howard, 42, is accused of critically stabbing Brandon Davidson at a home in the Parkview Heights area of Knox on Nov. 30, 2014. Davidson was transferred from IU Health Starke Hospital to South Bend for treatment of a wound to his heart and lung. Howard is charged with attempted murder and aggravated battery in connection with the incident. His plea is to a lesser battery offense. Continue reading

Road Paving Bid Chosen During Special Board of Public Works Meeting Monday Morning

roadworkFour streets in the city of Knox are scheduled for paving but first things first, who will do it? The roads planned for paving are Lake Street, East Street, Potter Street and Myrtle Court. Three bids were on the table during the board of public works meeting called specifically for this item. The three companies under deliberation were Walsh & Kelly Inc., Rieth-Riley Construction Company and E&B Paving. Continue reading
