Hydrant Removed, Boil Water Order in Effect for Affected Knox Residents

image (89)Crews from the Knox Water Department successfully removed a nonfunctioning fire hydrant by Wayne’s Lube Oil and Filter on Carlson Drive this morning.

Water Superintendent Todd Gardner told WKVI that residents on Carlson Drive and Pine Street from Henry Drive to Carlson Drive will need to boil water until water test results come back on Friday. The results will determine if the water is healthy for human consumption without the boil water order.

A fire hydrant was replaced behind the B&K Restaurant in Knox this week. Residents in that area are also encouraged to boil water until further notice.

Knox Water Crews to Remove Hydrant, Water Shutoff Expected

image (89)Water will be shut off to Knox residents again on Wednesday morning in order for street crews to remove a fire hydrant.

Residents on Carlson Drive and Pine Street from Henry Drive to Carlson Drive will be without water from about 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. CT. Water Superintendent Todd Gardner said a fire hydrant behind Wayne’s Lube Oil and Filter will be removed.

The Knox Water Department successfully replaced the fire hydrant behind the B&K Restaurant on Tuesday morning. The hydrant was a century old.

Knox City Council to Consider Comprehensive Plan

The Knox City Council will review the proposed five-year comprehensive plan when they meet tonight.

The comprehensive plan contains needs and wishes of the city that includes downtown projects, improvements to Main Street, the addition of signs and other features on South Main Street, beautifying the area around the schools and Sandy Acres Park, and an improvement to the Parkview area. Also included in the plan is an infrastructure and utility extension from Main Street to County Road 200.

Election Board To Review Performance Following Primary

 
 

The Starke County Election Board will be convening for the first time since last week’s Knox Primary Municipal Election.

Tuesday was the first election Starke County Clerk Vicki Cooley. Few of the races were contested during the primary. Incumbent Mayor Rick Chambers was defeated handily by former Mayor Dennis Estok. Several other City Council seats were contested, largely on the Democratic side.

Tip Leads to Meth Arrest

Meth BustStarke County Sheriff’s Deputies responding to a tip about possible drug activity made an arrest Sunday morning. They got a report around 10:45 a.m. of a man in a woods with a rifle and a strong chemical odor nearby. Officers found a burnt methamphetamine lab in the woods, according to a news release, and items used to make meth. Continue reading

Starke County Investigators Find Two Meth Labs, Suspect At Large

 
 

Investigators from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office are looking for a Knox man they believe was was making meth in his basement. They responded to a home in the 3000 east block of 200 South in Knox on Tuesday, May 5 after another man found a meth lab in the basement and called the police. Deputies from the Starke County Sheriff’s Office found the lab, precursors used to make meth, syringes and marijuana but were unable to locate the suspected cook, according to a news release. Water Shutoff Expected Tuesday for a Few Knox Residents

 
 

The Knox Water Department will be shutting off the water in an area of the city on Tuesday.

Water Superintendent Todd Gardner told WKVI News that crews will be replacing a fire hydrant behind the B&K restaurant on Council Drive and installing a line valve in that area. In order to complete this task properly, water will be shut off to residents in the area of Council Drive, a portion of Henry Drive, Airway Drive and Carlson Drive.

When the water is turned back on, residents affected by the hydrant replacement will be under a boil water order. Gardner will keep WKVI informed on the timing of all events.

Bid Accepted for Knox Sidewalk Program

 
 

The Knox Board of Public Works opened two bids for the 50/50 sidewalk program.

The members unanimously accepted the lowest bid from Pete Kuchel in the amount of $14,691. All of the bidding information will be reviewed by Street Superintendent Jeff Borg and City Attorney David Matsey to ensure it conforms to specifications.

Don’t Miss the Knox City-Wide Yard Sale Map Deadline

 
 

Time is running out for Knox residents who are planning to host yard sales next weekend to get their events on the free map. Call Danna at 574-772-2098 by Friday, May 8 with your information. Sales start Thursday, May 14 and continue through Sunday, May 17. Participants can host sales on any or all of the days without having to pay for a permit. Only signs purchased from the mayor’s office for a nominal fee will be allowed.

Maps will be available each day starting at 7 a.m. CDT at the Knox Moose Family Center on Main Street across from the courthouse. Breakfast and lunch will also be offered at the facility.

Incumbent Mayor Chambers Defeated in Primary

 
 

It took more forty minutes after polls closed for the ballots to arrive at the Starke County Courthouse on Tuesday evening.

The Knox Primary Municipal Election was taking place and saw a few races contested, largely among Democratic candidates. Eligible voters had ample opportunity to cast an early or absentee ballot leading up to the Primary Municipal Election, but the city’s four precincts all voted at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center on Tuesday.

Today is Last Day to Vote Absentee

 
 

Today is the last chance to vote absentee in the City of Knox Primary Municipal Election.

An absentee ballot may be cast in the second-floor meeting room in the Starke County Courthouse from 8 a.m. to noon today. As of Friday, 332 in-office, mail-in and travel board absentee ballots have been cast.

Polls are open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. CT tomorrow at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox for all eligible voters.

Starke County Road Closed for Bridge Repair

Road Closed SignA portion of a Starke County road will be closed for the next few months to accommodate a bridge repair. Starting today, 450 South will be closed from Range Road to 100 West. The bridge over Craigmile Ditch is being redone by the Starke County Highway Department.

Absentee Voting Available Today

 
 

Voters in the City of Knox Primary Municipal Election have a chance to vote absentee today in the Starke County Clerk’s office.

The second-floor meeting room in the Starke County Courthouse is open to absentee voters today from 8 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. CT. One more opportunity remains to vote absentee. The last chance to submit a ballot before Election Day is Monday, May 4 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Knox City Council Receives Funding Request from Community Services of Starke County

Community Services of Starke CountyThe Knox City Council discussed a request for funding from Community Services of Starke County.

The city council anticipates this request each year and $500 was already included in the budget for this year. The organization helps residents with transportation and nutrition needs for the elderly. Residents who need assistance with food use the food pantry to feed their families.
