The City of Knox will pay for a new International 4300 dump truck for the street department over a three-year period rather than completing the purchase in a single budget year. Mayor Rick Chambers says the chassis carries a price tag of nearly $64,000 plus $55,000 for the box. He told the council they can use the $30,000 remaining in the current year’s budget as a down payment on the vehicle and finance it for three years at a rate of 3.11 percent. Continue reading
The Starke County Historical Society received a check for $5,000 from the Starke County Genealogical Society on Sunday at the annual museum open house on Sunday. A local soldier got a heroes welcome home last night after a six-month tour of duty in the Middle East. The Starke and Pulaski County Sheriff’s Departments and firefighters in both counties escorted Cody Foust and his mother up U.S. 35. He’s with the Indiana National Guard’s 1413th Engineer Company, 81st Troop Command. The unit spent the past several months in Afghanistan performing base-closure and retrograde operations in support of the drawdown of Operation Enduring Freedom. Continue reading
Knox Mayor Rick Chambers is running for reelection. He notes much progress has been made in the city during his seven years in office and adds a process is under way to develop a long-range plan with citizen input to continue growth and prosperity.
Chambers also cites his experience running the city on a reduced budget due to state funding cuts. During his tenure as mayor, Knox has been awarded nearly $2 million in grants. Continue reading
The effort to regulate the placement of construction dumpsters within the Knox city limits took a step forward last night with passage of an ordinance on first reading. Employees of a Knox business exceeded their food pantry donation drive goal for the second straight year. Last year MPI set a goal of collecting 263 items for the Community Services of Starke County Food Pantry, one per employee. They nearly tripled it, with 700 items donated last year.

A second victim of a Friday fire at a rural Knox home has died. A representative from the Allen County Coroner’s Office in Fort Wayne tells WKVI news Linda Manns, 51, died at 10:50 p.m. Saturday from complications due to that fire. Annual Christmas music programs are scheduled at the Knox Elementary School starting with 3rd grade students today. The 2nd grade, tomorrow; 1st grade, Wednesday, Dec. 10th; and kindergarten students, Thursday, Dec. 11th. All programs begin at 6 p.m. in the Knox Elementary School gymnasium. A “Book Fair” for students and parents follows each concert.
The 17th annual Community Christmas Cantata will take place Sunday at the Knox United Methodist Church. The Community Cantata Choir will present “Born Is The King, It’s Christmas.” This musical event tells the story of Christ’s birth in an exciting and upbeat way. Continue reading
Starke County motorists can bypass Knox traffic by taking County Road 300 East/Klockner Drive from Culver Road to State Road 8. The contractor in charge of the road improvements through the Knox Industrial Park advised WKVI News last evening the intersection of Klockner Drive and Culver Road is open to traffic again in all directions. A two-year-old child is dead as a result of an early morning fire at a rural Starke County home. The Bass Lake Fire Department responded to a residence in the area of 700 South and 300 East just before 7:30 a.m. They pulled two adults from the blaze but were unable to find a two-year-old child in time. A Grovertown man was sentenced to serve 17 years in the Indiana Department of Corrections during a hearing in Starke Circuit Court yesterday.
Ryan Reyes, 19, pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state to two counts of child molesting as a Class B felony in two separate cases and criminal mischief as a Class D felony in a separate case.
The intersection of Culver Road and Klockner Drive will reopen to traffic later today. It’s been closed since Nov. 10 so improvements to Klockner Drive/County Road 300 East could be finished. The home of former Indiana Governor Henry F. Schricker is ready for the Christmas season. A “memory tree” is at the front door on the outside, and the old fashioned Christmas tree stands fully decorated the the Schricker living room.
The Starke County Museum, which is housed in the home, will be open at 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec.7th. to observe the Christmas holiday. Hot cider and cookies will be served.
