Uninsured youngsters who still need back-to-school physicals and shots can get both at HealthLinc in Knox. The facility is celebrating National Health Center Week today with an open house from 3 until 6 p.m. Appointments are necessary to get physicals and shots, but a number of other services are available to walk-in customers. Blood Supplies Dwindling, Donations Needed
Blood is in short supply in Indiana. American Red Cross officials say donations dropped significantly over the summer. That’s due in part to donors taking vacations. Also, many blood donation drives occur at schools, which are out for the summer.
Starke County Commissioners Approve Change Order for 300 East Project
The Starke County Commissioners Monday approved a $70,000 change order to add a right turn lane to the rebuilt intersection of State Road 8 and County Road 300 East. Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charlie Weaver said it was omitted from the original project specifications in order to keep costs in order. Continue reading
Two Fugitives Arrested in Knox
Two Steuben County fugitives were arrested by Knox City Police Department officers Wednesday afternoon.
Officers received a tip that Nancy Bailey, 30, and Kelly Moe, 31, were at a home in the 300 block of Spruce Dr. in Knox. When police arrived at the scene, they found the pair inside the home where they provided false names to the responding officers, according to the police report.
School Year Under Way at The Crossing
The academic year is off to a good start at Starke County’s newest school. Classes started last Friday at The Crossing. It’s a faith-based alternative school that offers a mix of classroom and vocational training to youngsters who have been expelled, dropped out of school or have otherwise fallen through the educational cracks. Knox, North Judson-San Pierre Schools Ready for New Year
Summer is almost over for students attending area schools.
Knox Community School Superintendent A.J. Gappa said the staff is nearly ready for the start of school.
“Everybody is trying to get everything ready,” said Gappa. “The building administrators are getting things going. We have some professional development days this week for all of the staff members. New teachers are coming in Friday and all staff members will report on Monday, Aug. 11. We also have back to school night from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in each of the buildings. Parents can come in and meet the teachers and see what the classrooms are like and get going from there.”
Starke County Commissioners Accept Bridge Bids
Work on two replacement bridges in Starke County will begin as soon as possible. The county commissioners Monday accepted bids from LaPorte Construction Company for the bridge on County Road 800 East over Eagle Creek and the bridge on County Road 900 South over Bogus Run. Starke County Commissioners Approve Ambulance Service Expansion
The Starke County EMS base in North Judson will soon have a paramedic on duty around the clock. The county commissioners approved the expansion of Advanced Life Support, or ALS, service to that base immediately and to Grovertown starting Jan. 1. Knox already has 24-hour ALS coverage. ISTEP Scores Mixed for Area School Corporations
Indiana students overall showed improvement on their ISTEP scores in both math and language arts. Scores released yesterday by the Indiana Department of Education indicate 80.7 percent of students passed English, compared to 79.5 percent in 2013. Math scores went up from 83 to 83.5 percent statewide. Continue reading
Community Meeting Set to Curb Park Vandalism
The number of vandalism reports in Wythogan Park has slowed, but it continues.
Knox Mayor Rick Chambers is attempting to gather information to help curb the ongoing damage reported in Knox’s most popular park.
A meeting is set for Wednesday, Aug. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center in Knox where opinions will be noted about ways to improve security. Any other suggestions will be welcome during this information session.
Starke County Commissioners to Discuss EMS Director Salary
The Starke County Commissioners will discuss the salary for the new county EMS director when they meet this morning. They’re still searching for a replacement for Paul Matthewson, who resigned from the director’s position July 1. Keith Eimgh is serving as director in an interim position until a permanent replacement is hired. First though the commissioners want to review the salary for the job. Continue reading

Fresh Produce Vouchers Available for Seniors
Free vouchers are now available to area residents 60 years of age and older to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables.
The Northwest Indiana Community Action Agency is working with the Indiana State Health Department in hosting this year’s Senior’s Farmer’s Market Voucher Program. This program provides up to $20 in vouchers for seniors to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmer’s markets and food stands.
Property Tax Reassessment Under Way in Starke County
Representatives from the Starke County Assessor’s Office are visiting homes throughout the county to conduct the state-mandated cyclical reassessment process. They are required to physically inspect 25 percent of the properties in the county each year to ensure property records contain accurate information. County Assessor Rhonda Milner says this is done to make sure taxpayers receive accurate assessments. Continue reading
