Knox Community School Board Dissects IREAD Results
The Knox Community School Board received a positive IREAD testing report.
The IREAD test is a state test given to all third grade students to measure their reading abilities and comprehension. If the student does not pass the test, he or she will be able to go through remediation and take the test again in the summer.
Knox Board of Public Works Discusses Drug Testing
The Knox Board of Public Works is attempting to reduce the number of required drug tests that need to be conducted on city employees.
Mayor Rick Chambers asked the department heads to provide job descriptions for their employees to determine those who are required to be drug tested. The only employees that need to be tested are CDL license holders and there are only handful that work for the city.
Prescription Medication Drop Box Available at Knox City PD
Knox City Police Chief Clint Norem encourages you to utilize the police department’s prescription medication drop box to get rid of your unwanted or unused prescription medication.
Norem gave an update on the utilization of the drop box to the Knox Board of Public Works last week. Norem explained that residents have left a few deposits in the newly installed drop box. He hopes that more people become aware of the drop box and help rid the area of potential prescription medication thefts.

Knox Board of Public Works Discusses Resident’s Water Bill
The Knox Board of Public Works held discussion with a resident concerning her water and sewer bill.
Janet Black explained to the board members that there was a water leak detected underneath her house and she didn’t know about it. Her son had fixed the leak but she was shocked when she got her water bill and it was $410.47 – a far cry from her regular bill of $61.00.
Knox Community School Board Spotlights Music Program
The music program was spotlighted during the Knox Community School Board’s recent meeting.
Band Director Craige Phipps talked to the board about the successful season of the winter drumline, the winter guard and the groups who participated in state competitions this year.
Superintendent A.J. Gappa explained that the band got to go down to Disney World during spring break to play some music.
“After working with a professional musician for just about 45 minutes and doing some sight-reading, they played the music to the Disney cartoon Tarzan. They played the actual soundtrack. The board enjoyed watching that cartoon. It was kind of neat!” Gappa exclaimed.
Fire Hydrant Flushing Scheduled in North Judson and Knox
Fire hydrant flushing is a sure sign of spring. The town of North Judson will be clearing hydrants Sunday and Monday night, starting around 8 p.m. The city of Knox will start the process Monday and continue through Friday. If you experience cloudy, rusty or colored water during that time, run the faucet until it clears up.
Knox Residents Jailed on Meth Charges
A month-long investigation by the Knox Police Department culminated in the arrest of two residents on meth charges last night. Alfred Higdon, 40, and Shari Melton, 39, were arrested at a home in the 300 block of Delaware Street. Officers reportedly found chemicals used in the manufacture of meth as well as methamphetamine and marijuana at the residence. Higdon and Melton both face charges of possession of methamphetamine, possession of precursors and possession of marijuana. Formal charges are pending.
Knox Board of Public Works Discusses Progress at Phoenix House
The Knox Board of Public Works approved a pay application for Chester Construction at their meeting this week in the amount of $49,563.74. The board members also approved a claim for Mark Milo Enterprises for $29,307.50.
Van Janovic from Territorial Engineering explained to the board that these claims are for the Phoenix House construction project. He said Chester’s work is about 91 percent complete and the parking lot work being done by Mark Milo is about 63 percent complete. He said he walked through the project area and was impressed with the work that has been done and it’s been on schedule.
City of Knox Accepting Bids for Paving
The city of Knox is soliciting paving bids. Sealed bids for the construction and paving of streets with hot asphalt concrete will be accepted until 9:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22 at the clerk-treasurer’s office. Copies of the bid specifications are available during regular business hours. The Board of Public Works and Safety reserves the right to reject any and all bids and to waive any informality in the bidding process.
Knox School Board Acts on General Diploma Recommendation
During their April 1 meeting, the Knox Community School Board heard from High School Principal Dr. Elizabeth Ratliff concerning diploma credits needed for a general diploma.
Dr. Ratliff suggested lowering the credits for a general diploma from 46 to 42. The same English and Language Arts credits and Math credits would be needed, but dropping the number of credits would allow more opportunities in the vocational classes or other electives. Plus, the students would be able to graduate on time.
Knox Board of Public Works Opens Bid for Lift Station Project
The Knox Board of Public Works opened bids for the upcoming lift station project.
The lift station near the south side fire station on Clabaugh Drive is antiquated and will be replaced in this project.
Update on Preschool Class Given to Knox School Board
The Knox Community School Board got an update on the preschool program at their most recent meeting. Superintendent A.J. Gappa said the program began at the beginning of the month and it’s going smoothly so far.
“The enrollment in the preschool program is now up to thirteen students in each class – one class in the morning and one class in the afternoon. Three of those students are new students who entered the class as the result of the recent Kindergarten Roundup,” said Gappa.
Those students will be entering kindergarten this August with the rest of the kindergarten students.
Henry F. Schricker Public Library Holds Cupcake Contest
The Henry F. Schricker Public Library sponsored a cupcake contest at the library last week. The theme was “How does the community relate to the library?” Nine people submitted their creations to a panel of judges who taste-tested all of the submissions.
The judges were from WKVI Radio, Mexico Lindo, County Kettle and Christo’s Restaurant. A variety of different flavors and textures pleased the judges as they chomped and sampled. Continue reading
Undecided Voters Tour Knox Elementary’s Palmer Wing
Members of the Whatever It Takes Committee hope to persuade undecided Knox Community School Corporation voters to support a property tax referendum to address problems with the school’s 60-year-old Palmer wing. Issues include an outdated heating and cooling system for which parts are no longer available, an electrical system that is inadequate to handle the load put on it by computers and other techonology and a cafeteria that’s too small to prepare food for the entire student body. They’ve held a series of open houses at the school so voters can see the problems for themselves. One lady, Gail, remains undecided. She says she wants to make sure school officials are prudent stewards of taxpayer money.
Two Arrested After Chase in Knox
A Knox man and a Winamac woman were arrested Friday after a brief chase incident in Knox.
The officer with the Knox City Police Department was following a vehicle that was traveling 62 mph in a 45 mph zone. The officer continued to follow the vehicle through the area and caught up to the driver who was now traveling 90 mph. The driver then entered the intersection 250 South and 250 East and blew through the stop sign. The officer allegedly saw the occupants throw items from the windows. After traveling a distance and blowing through a few more stop signs, the driver finally stopped on 500 South, a half-mile from U.S. 35.
Knox Council Fails to Reach Quorum; Special Meeting Scheduled
The Knox City Council held a public hearing last night in regards to re-establishing the cumulative capital development fund for the city, but no city taxpayers were present to give their input on the matter. Unfortunately, the council did not have a quorum as three members were absent, preventing them from conducting any official business besides discussion.
Minimal Injuries in Three Vehicle Accident North of Knox
Starke County Sheriff’s Deputies and emergency personnel were called to a three vehicle accident Tuesday afternoon.
The driver of a vehicle was traveling north of Knox and attempted to turning left into a driveway on U.S. 35 just south of State Road 8 west. The car behind that vehicle slowed and waited for the vehicle to turn when a third vehicle and rear-ended the second vehicle. The second vehicle then hit the vehicle turning left.
