Three Injured in Early Morning Culver Crash

 
 

One person was airlifted from the scene of a single-vehicle wreck early this morning near Lake Maxinkuckee. It happened in the 2800 Block of East Shore Drive, according to our reporting partners at WNDU-TV. A vehicle struck a cement wall or embankment, and the occupants had to be cut from it. Two other people were taken to an area hospital for treatment. All three were male, but we don’t have their names or ages yet or any information about the extent of their injuries or where they were taken for treatment.

Toxicology Results Released in Lake Max Drowning Death

Neither drugs nor alcohol were factors in the July 14 drowning death of a 22-year-old Plymouth man, according to toxicology results released by the Marshall County Coroner’s office. Valentin Sirghi, 22, was swimming with a friend near the public beach at Lake Maxinkuckee when he went under water. Rescue teams searched the area for about an hour before they found his body. Sirghi was pronounced dead at St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Plymouth. Final autopsy results are pending, but preliminary indications are that Sirghi died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning.

Preliminary Autopsy Results Revealed in Lake Maxinkuckee Drowning Incident

 
 

An autopsy has found that 22-year-old Valentin Sirghi of Plymouth died as a result of asphyxiation due to drowning in an incident at Lake Maxinkuckee Sunday evening.

That preliminary result was confirmed by Marshall County Deputy Coroners Ann Leed and Brigette Hite. The autopsy was conducted by Dr. Joseph Prahlow, Board-Certified Pathologist in Mishawaka.

Drowning in Culver Takes Life of 22-Year-Old Man

A fatal drowning in Culver is under investigation by Indiana DNR officials after EMS and police responded to an emergency call Sunday night. Shortly after 7 p.m., officials recovered the body of Valentin Sirghi, 22 near the public beach.

Sirghi and a friend were reportedly wading offshore near the buoy line, and when his friend was on his way back to shore, he noticed Sirghi had gone under. Officers quickly arrived at the scene and recovered the body around 8 p.m., when paramedics promptly transported him to St. Joseph Memorial Hospital in Plymouth. There, Sirghi was pronounced dead around 8:30 p.m.

While the official cause of death has not yet been determined, officials have confirmed that weather did not play a part in the man’s death. More information on the drowning will be reported as it is released.

USGS Releases Preliminary Core Sample Results for Lake Maxinkuckee

Core sampling has been completed on Lake Maxinkuckee by the United States Geological Survey and preliminary results have been released.

According to a newsletter posted on the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Council website, the USGS team members tested for water clarity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen levels, PH, water column temperatures as well as chlorophyll.

Deep Study at Lake Maxinkuckee Postponed

A deep study to determine the amount of nutrients, algae and other elements in Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver, and its history, has been postponed to May 13-15.

The U.S. Geological Survey out of Kansas will conduct the study which the Lake Maxinkuckee Environmental Council (LMEC) predicts will make officials better understand how much change the lake has undergone since its last deep study done in 1984. One issue the scientists will be looking at is the amount of phosphorous in the lake.

Culver Resident Loses Truck, Boat and Trailer in Lake Maxinkuckee

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department responded to a call that a truck was found submerged in Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver.

The investigating officer reports that Cara Lewellen, of Culver, was backing up her boat/trailer into the water on the west shore access of Lake Maxinkuckee. While backing up, she lost control of the vehicle, causing it to become fully submerged in the water. Lewellen escaped from the vehicle before it entered the water and she was not injured. The vehicle and trailer were later retrieved by Marshall County Dive Team members.
