A 17-year-old and an 18-year-old were arrested in LaPorte on Sunday after attempting to get into Little Caeser’s Pizza on Monroe Street.
According to LaPorte police, the employee had just locked the front door to close the business when they arrived. One suspect was reportedly masked and caried a weapon when he tried to open the locked door. When they found the door to be secured, they ran from the business.
Officers with the LaPorte City Police Department will be working 40 hours of Operation Pull Over funded seat belt patrols in April. Impaired driving patrols will be held every weekend in April that are organized through the LaPorte County DUI Taskforce.
LaPorte City Police Department officers have investigated several accidents so far this year. Severe weather and alcohol contributed to most of the accidents.
A case has been forwarded to the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s office that provides the details of a LaPorte man who allegedly fired two gun shots in the 1400 block of Lake Street.
On Friday, March 28, LaPorte police officers found a man sitting in a chair outside an abandoned building. The 20-year-old man reportedly told officers that he was upset over some personal issues. He denied having any weapons, but police found two knives in his pockets and a .357 revolver in his pocket along with ammunition.
A LaPorte couple recently found out they were victims of identity theft after getting a cashier’s check and a letter from a bank in California. The letter from Citizen’s Bank in La Lolla, Calif. stated the cashier’s check for $3,675.06 could not be deposited using the information that was provided to them. That’s when the couple discovered their identity had been stolen, and someone had used their Social Security numbers to file a federal income tax return. They contacted the IRS and a credit monitoring agency to report the activity and also filed a report with the LaPorte Police Department.
The LaPorte City Police Department recently wrapped up another successful Operation Pull Over Blitz.
Officers worked 52 hours of impaired driving patrols and 122 hours of aggressive driving patrols. Six arrests were made that included a preliminary charge of Operating While Intoxicated and two arrests for other offenses. Officers wrote a total of 267 citations and 225 warnings for other violations; of those, 128 were for speeding, 19 for driving while suspended, 14 for stop sign and traffic signal violations, 61 for seat belt violations, five for texting while driving and several others for various offenses.
Operation Pull Over Blitz #78 ran from Feb. 28 to March 23.
Operation Pull Over is a federally funded enforcement initiative administered by the Traffic Safety Division of the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute.
Employees at a bank in downtown LaPorte called the police on Friday to report a man who was acting suspicious. The incident happened around noon at the PNC Bank at 800 Lincolnway. A bank representative says a white man came into the bank and walked away each time an employee asked if he needed assistance. The man appeared to be studying the ceiling, and possibly the camera system, according to bank officials. He was also typing or texting something on his cell phone while in the bank and appeared to be wearing an ill-fitting wig. The officer who took the report told the bank employees to call the police immediately should any other suspicious activity occur.
LaPorte Police took a report from a representative at the McDonald’s on Boyd Boulevard Tuesday after officials there discovered they had gotten a fake $10 bill sometime during the day during a purchase transaction. Police confirmed the bill was counterfeit and seized it as evidence. Anyone with information about the bogus bill is asked to call the LaPorte Police Department at 219-326-9446. A Michigan City man was arrested on Saturday evening after a LaPorte police officer found Moore had four outstanding warrants out for his arrest.
Shaine Moore, 38, was pulled over in the 200 block of Pine Lake Ave. in LaPorte after an officer found that he allegedly displayed several traffic violations.
A LaPorte man was arrested Thursday morning after being found in a house without the owner’s permission.
The complainant told police that he and his wife take care of the property and when they arrived at the home, they found a pickup backed into the driveway that is not supposed to be there. The front door was standing open.
A LaPorte man was arrested Saturday after allegedly forcing his way into an apartment and assaulting the resident.
The victim told LaPorte police officers that he was asleep in his apartment when a knock on the door awoke him. He answered the door and a man, whom he knows as “Shaky Joe,” allegedly forced his way inside and physically assaulted the victim. The suspect then reportedly stole medications and the victim’s cell phone.
The victim was able to give police a description of the suspect and officers later located him. Joseph D. Nixon, 37 of LaPorte, surrendered to police without incident. He was booked into the LaPorte County Jail on a preliminary charge of Robbery, a Class B felony.
An attempt by police to speak to a wanted man didn’t go as expected.
LaPorte officers were on patrol on Friday when they spotted a man wanted on warrants. Brandon Clark, 40, of LaPorte was standing near the ATM at Wells Fargo Bank when officers approached him.
LaPorte police are investigating an incident in which a man was reportedly beaten and robbed.
The victim told police that between midnight and 2 a.m. Tuesday he was jumped by two men in the 300 block of E. Street. One suspect was described as a Caucasian man and the other man was wearing a face mask.
Fraudulent debit cards were reportedly presented at Horizon Bank on Lincolnway on Monday by a man attempting to get cash.
A bank attendant told LaPorte police that an African American male asked for $750 in cash from each of the two debit cards presented to her. He provided an Illinois Driver’s License under the name “Jarrien C. Jones”.
LaPorte City Police Department detectives are investigating an online job scam.
The victim told police that he applied for several jobs online. He received an unsolicited email inquiry about surprise shopping. He would be given money to purchase groceries at a local market and provide feedback. If he had any money left over from his shopping trip, then he could keep it.
A man in LaPorte contacted police after discovering his 14-year-old daughter had received inappropriate messages and photos from a man on her Facebook social network account. The dad said his daughter and the suspect met through gaming social sites. The suspect, who is said to be a 24-year-old man from New York, has been communicating back and forth with the victim since December of 2013.
A LaPorte man reportedly lost $28,420 to fraud. The victim told police that he had been contacted by his credit union, who notified him that there had been six electronic fund transfers from his account between the dates of Jan. 1 and Jan. 14.
The victim said he did not make the transfers and he gave no approval for them. The case remains under investigation.
The LaPorte City Police Department is investigating a report of burglary at Maple City Montessori School that reportedly occurred between sometime between 9 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15 and 7 a.m. on Thursday. Police say the suspects entered the building and stole a bank bag containing cash, two laptop computers and three electronic tablets with a total estimated value of $4000.
LaPorte police arrested a Chicago woman who reportedly tried to cash a counterfeit check at a LaPorte Savings Bank branch on Wednesday. Tabitha Jones, 24, was apprehended around 1:30 p.m. at the bank branch on Boyd Boulevard. Jones told the police she was working with a male named “Quinten Pillow” and another unidentified female traveling in a white Infiniti and a white Chevrolet Suburban. The police report indicates they told Jones to take the check into the bank and cash it and she would be paid for her assistance. About 10 minutes before Jones’ arrest, police were dispatched to the LaPorte Savings Bank branch on Indiana Avenue after officials there discovered they had just cashed a counterfeit check. Police say a black man with an Illinois identification card indicating his name was Quinten Pillow cashed a check for $1,346 drawn on the account of J. Shoffner. The man left the bank before employees there realized the check was counterfeit.
A work release escapee was arrested for theft late Wednesday night.
LaPorte police were called to 711 Tipton St. on a report of theft. The victim said 20-year-old Scott Skinner had just left the residence reportedly carrying a tin box with approximately $50 in change.
