A FEMA Disaster Recovery Center (DRC) will open in LaPorte today to assist flood-affected residents in La Porte, Porter and Starke counties.

Five people were seriously injured Sunday, after police say an SUV pulled into the path of an oncoming semi truck near LaPorte. Deputies with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office say it happened around 7:00 p.m., at the intersection of State Road 2 and 18th Street, in front of the LaPorte County Fairgrounds.
Police officers who are participating in the annual Concerns of Police Survivor’s bicycle ride will be going through LaPorte today.
Officers will be arriving at 9 a.m. CT. They are riding around the perimeter of the state to help support families of officers who were killed in the line of duty and raise awareness of survivor issues.
Two teenagers were arrested Thursday after LaPorte County law enforcement officials found an explosive device at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds.
Deputies were notified that a potential explosive device was in the possession of a juvenile in attendance at the fair and it was believed that the suspect would detonate the device near the carnival rides.
The 32nd annual ABATE/MDA ride is coming up this month. The LaPorte County Fairgrounds will be host to the event, sponsored by ABATE of Indiana Region 2, made up of dedicated members from seven northern Indiana counties including Lake, Porter, LaPorte, Starke, Jasper, Newton, and Pulaski.
ABATE is a motorcycle rights and safety organization that believes in the freedom of the road with an emphasis on achieving the safest motorcycling conditions in the state – but they also believe in helping those who are in need. For 32 years, the organization has raised over $3 million for Muscular Distrophy Association research and local patient service programs.
The Pyrotechnics Guild International is holding its annual fireworks convention through Aug. 17 at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds.
During this week-long convention, visitors are encouraged to view some of the most spectacular fireworks displays in the world. Tuesday night’s display will feature a presentation display and then a competition program between three different companies. They will discharge some of the best fireworks visitors will ever see and many that haven’t been seen in any display yet. The displays won’t be of a “finale” in nature, but each firework will be discharged one at a time, at a lively pace, with a description.
These displays will also take place tomorrow and Friday night, all beginning at 9 p.m. The gates open at 6 p.m., and tickets are on sale at the LaPorte County Visitors Convention Bureau offices in the Marquette Mall.
