Two recent high-school graduates are each heading off to college with $5,000 thanks to a scholarship opportunity provided by the South Bend Cubs. The local recipients of the scholarship are Mattie Reese, a softball player from John Glenn High School and Andrew Samuelson, a baseball player from LaPorte High School.

LaPorte High School on Lockdown Early Tuesday
LaPorte High School was on lockdown on Tuesday after officials found an unspent 9mm bullet in the parking lot.
According to LaPorte Mayor Blair Milo’s Facebook page, the lockdown was a precautionary move and officials are looking into the situation.

LaPorte High School Player Dies After Collapsing During Practice
Grief counselors will be at LaPorte High School today to help students and teachers cope with the death of a 17-year-old football player who died after suffering cardiac arrest during yesterday’s football practice. Jake West collapsed on the track area at the field, according to WNDU-TV. First responders shocked him several times with a defibrillator before rushing him to IU Health LaPorte Hospital. An autopsy is scheduled this afternoon. West was a junior at LaPorte and played middle linebacker for the Slicers.
State Officials Honor LaPorte High School Student for Essay
An 11th grader from LaPorte High School was honored at the Statehouse for placing first in an essay contest.
Jessica Bohlin was recognized by Lt. Gov. Sue Ellspermann and State Representative Tom Dermody (R-LaPorte) for her winning essay in the contest entitled: “Our Food, Our Farmers: Nourishing Generations of Hoosiers.” Five other essay winners were also acknowledged in two other age categories at the Statehouse Tuesday.
Former LaPorte High School Volleyball Coach to Go to Trial
The Indiana Court of Appeals ruled that a trial should be held for a former LaPorte High School volleyball coach on charges that she failed to report a relationship between a 15-year-old player and a 48-year-old coach.
MaryBeth Lebo faces two misdemeanor charges of Failing to Report Child Abuse or Neglect, and the Court of Appeals ruled that a trial should be held to determine whether Lebo knowingly and intentionally failed to inform the relationship between the girl and coach Robert Ashcroft, who had been sentenced to 21 years in prison for sexual misconduct and child seduction last year.
